First step is to prepare the rusted area or surface to apply new paint. You can take the help of electric hand held grinder. You should first make the surface as smooth as possible and free of defects not only to accept the paint but also for cosmetic purpose so that people will not see any sign of repairs on it. Use hand held grinders to level the surface and use it until you can feel the rust in the surface. You will remove as much as the rust as possible by doing this. You should be careful while applying a grinder, because if you overdo it might remove a lot of material in no time. Make sure to check frequently whether you've removed enough material or not.

The second step is to apply prime and paint. Prepare the area to be painted with blue painter's tape which is widely available. It is best because it does not leave any sticky residue after removing it. You should avoid applying thick coats of body primer. Apply three thin coats of body primer and leave it overnight to make sure that the primer can fully work. You can then make the surface where primer is applied smooth by lightly hand sanding the area with the use of a piece of 150 grit paper. Now, the surface is ready to accept paints. Use thin coats of paint three or four times, depending upon how finished it looks. One thing you should do is, take some times off after applying each coat.

Now it will take overnight for the paint to cure. Now give a good wash to finish the repair to finish the task. These easy steps saves good amount of money. If you already have a grinder, it should not take more than 25$ at all.
