Before you take any action on this, please know this: there are harsh chemicals being used in a body shop and if you have or have ever had breathing problems or a tendency toward breathing problems, a body shop might not be for you. There are many things that you may qualify to do, but if you damage your health trying to work on cars in a body shop, that will do no one any good and you will still be out the money for any training you engaged.

Chipped Automobile Windshields Can Crack Out From the Heat of Summer Day


Chipped automobile windshields are vulnerable to cracking when exposed to extreme heat or cold. Summer sun can raise temperatures inside an automobile to over 120 degrees while summers nights can be cool.

Automobile windshields are made of two pieces of glass laminated together to make up our modern windshield. Being two pieces of glass, the inside glass and outside glass, they are made of the same glass, no differences inside to outside separated by the laminate, except one faces out and is exposed to the elements the other faces inward and is in a protected environment inside the auto. This can cause temperature differences from the inside glass to outside glass that puts stress on the windshield as the windshield glass expands or heats and cools at different rates, for instance a parked car exposed to the sun with a nearby shade tree. The inside temperature of the car is 125 degrees the outside temperature of the glass is 95 degrees and a cool afternoon breeze is starting to blow cooling the outside glass, but the inside of the car is still 122 degrees then the sun moves behind the tree and the outer glass cools even more putting more stress on the windshield as the inside glass is hot and the outside glass exposed to the cool breeze is much cooler.

So now that we understand when inside or outside windshield glass temperatures are higher or lower than the other this creates stress, now add installation stresses as the windshield is bonded to the automobile frame and cured. Through in a rock chip and the potential outcome will be a cracked out windshield that has to be replaced.

Most rock chips have cracks some visible some not, but left alone most all rock chips and cracks will spread from the stresses discussed earlier. Heating and cooling, expanding and contracting of the windshield day after day is all that is required to make rock chips expand into long cracks. Most rock chips and small cracks can be effectively repaired and structural integrity will be restored, a small percentage will crack out, those most likely to break out are rock chips or other impacts close to the edge of the windshield or those that neglect repair allowing moisture and dirt to enter the break along with stresses and temperature swings are most vulnerable.

What should you do if you get a rock chip? Cover the break with clear tape to keep water and dirt which can enter the break out, but don't impair your vision with the tape for safety reasons. Building A New Body Shop


The purpose of this article, and the subsequent follow ups I will be writing, is to share with our customers what we hope will be valuable information in not only starting but running a successful collision repair facility.

When someone decides they are going to start a business, it usually comes from the thought that "Hey...not only can I do that...but I can do it better than the other guy....AND I can make some money doing it." As such, the entrepreneurial spirit in us kicks in. We put together a business plan, we weigh the options of cost/loss versus profit and we decide to roll the dice, as it were, because we know we can build a better mouse trap. It is this spirit that drives us all in business.

In starting a collision repair facility, there are essentially two schools of thought. The first being the "corporate" path where one looks to build large scale, borrowing heavily either from banks or investors to finance the designing, building, staffing and managing of a larger facility. The second, and far more common is the "mom and pop" approach. Now arguments can be made as to which one is better for the ROI of the investment, but I tend to believe that the smaller shop is a better investment, long term for the ownership. I recently spoke with a long-time customer of mine about his thoughts on a start up body shop. He had successfully expanded and maintained a very large facility over the past 20 years. His annual gross numbers are well above 2 million. When I asked him his opinion on a best case scenario for starting a body shop, I was surprised to hear that his views are very much like mine considering he chose the "corporate" method and it has done extremely well for him.

When my friend Robert went to the bank 8 years ago, he was asking to borrow about one million dollars to build his new shop. He was looking at increasing the size of his operation by over four times its current state. Expanding his operation from a 4200 square feet facility to a building well over 22,000 square feet was a mammoth undertaking. He rolled the dice, borrowed heavily and has since made a very good living for himself as well as his employees. Yet when asked if he would recommend doing the "corporate" start up, he said he would not and that the "mom & pop" approach was a much better decision for a new shop owner. As we discussed the issue over a few phone calls, these were some of the key points we agreed upon.

1. You should not start any business without a business plan and you will not borrow money from a bank for a new business without a business plan, period. My advice is to seek professional help on this. Look to the Small Business Administration to help you with establishing your plan. They have a large library of "how do I's" for the small business starter. They can recommend advisors, give ideas about money management and in some case help you secure some funding sources to help in the startup process. Additionally, with the current economy having banks scared of lending money to anyone regardless of your credit score, borrowing history or cash flow, they can help you solidify your smaller business plan. Also getting a bank to lend you a smaller amount of money maybe a little easier if you have a well thought out and structured business plan as long as they feel comfortable with the amounts and the diligence you have put into the research of the plan. Be sure to include studies of the surrounding marketplace. How many other shops are in an immediate proximity to your proposed location? Is there sufficient egress to the property via main intersections or other businesses in the area that can generate potential "drive by" advertising for you? Do you plan to build or perhaps lease an existing building?

Have you made any contacts with potential clients such as rental companies, delivery companies, cab companies, or perhaps municipalities for bid work? Getting secured, contracted work will add bottom line receivables to your business that banks like to see. Be sure to approach suppliers and work out some soft numbers for discounts on parts and materials so you know your margins based on percentages. As you are looking for a location or perhaps looking to build, remember that you can always expand if the business calls for it. Avoid going into "building" debt and not being able to afford to install the necessary tools you need for opening day. Try not to over extend your business on Day 1 by over borrowing. Establish the track record with the lender by borrowing what you need to get your shop up and running and perhaps a small operating cushion. Sell them on the fact that you will be profitable quickly.

2. You will need to further decide how your business plan will be incorporated into a complete business model for your shop. A common misconception is that "bigger makes more money". This can be true as we see in the larger consolidators. It means, however, as we are starting up more cost, higher risk and an inability, far too often, to survive. Start with what you know. Perhaps you are a good painter/body man. You have a good body man ready to come on board. Perhaps another fellow is a frame man. All you need is a small space, perhaps three bays, a small Chief rack and a paint booth to make it all happen. It is as simple as that. Start small and grow. Do not over commit unless you have something you can fall back on. In Robert's case, he was maintaining his original shop while he expanded and built his new shop. As you establish your business, your customer base and your reputation, you will see opportunities to expand as your bottom line grows.

3. Pay "cash" as much as possible until you have established your cash flow patterns. Many shops I have talked to over the years get strangled in a cash flow net. It is easy to do regardless of the industry but in our collision repair industry, it happens more than most due to the nature of the business. Fronting repair costs of parts and labor, awaiting payment for past repairs, fleet accounts that pay on 30 or 60 notes or getting stuck with abandoned vehicles are only few of the problems shops face. These and many more lead to faster cash out and slower cash in. So do what you can to minimize credit exposure. Pay cash for parts when possible. Try not to give away profits by "financing" deductibles whenever you can. As you establish your profit margins, you could consider this as an alternate revenue source but I caution against it in a start up shop.

4. Try not to bog your shop down with "stall sitters" such as severe hits or restoration projects. If you have the physical space to store them or move them easily from the work areas, it isn't a big deal but remember, we are looking at a small shop scenario. The longer a car sits on the frame rack or in a tear down stall waiting on another car to come out means higher turn time and less flow through your shop. Try to establish a quick fix mentality. "Hang and Paint" repairs, while considerably less dollar amounts, tend to be as high or higher profit percentage than heavy hits. The turn time for fender benders is obviously less and can lead to attracting clients such as rental companies or service companies that need their vehicles on the road. A faster turn time for repairs on a rental car equates to more money for the rental company. This can obviously lead to more work in volume from the rental company to your shop. So consider keeping a streamlined process to handle smaller hits more efficiently to be more profitable. I am not suggesting you turn work away but rather be a little selective on the scheduling if you can.

5. Work to make sure your customers are the top priority in your business. They are the reason you are here. Go the extra mile. Make them realize they came to your business for a reason. A business man I know is fond of saying "the difference in ordinary and extraordinary is the extra." When you think about it, it is the extra things one does for the customer that offsets them from the competition. Taking care of your customer is the easiest way to secure another customer. Generations of family member continue to take their vehicles the same shop because they have an attachment to the repair facility by some means. If you can establish that type of relationship by taking care of the extras, you can grow your client base laterally without much cost. Remember, every job we do in a body shop is like a rolling billboard for the next potential customer. Friends know that "Joe Consumer" wrecked his car. When they ask, you clearly want "Joe" to tell them that every aspect of the repair process was handled professionally, quickly and without incident. Since on the average, drivers only come to need repairs done once every 7 years. That is a long stretch if you are not ambitiously going after more customers. You do this by taking care of the details, the extras.

While these steps might seem simplistically drawn out, they are the cornerstone to a thriving business. What needs to be understood is that there are a lot of moving parts to getting a shop open. These are more fundamental practices. Car Repair Tip - Protect Against Moisture in Your Exhaust System


Here's a simple car repair tip that's easy to implement - keep moisture out of your exhaust system and thereby reduce its corrosive effects. By its very nature, exhaust fumes contain moisture. Some systems contain a drip hole to vacate puddles of water that would otherwise accumulate in mufflers, resonators, cross-overs and other parts of the system. Other systems rely on heat to drive out moisture.

Moisture accumulation in automotive exhaust used to be a big problem with older cars, but improvements in materials have reduced the problem considerably. Even so, it still presents a potential for unnecessary repair if you're not careful and allow moisture to accumulate.

The most simple way to reduce moisture accumulation in the exhaust system is to minimize brief operation of the vehicle and use it only when you know you'll be running it sufficiently to heat up the exhaust system and drive out moisture. A good rule is 10 miles of travel. That generally is enough to warm up the car completely.

The idea is to minimize the number of times you start the car up just to move it around in the drive or on the street, and start the car up primarily when you're really going to use it. It can save on unnecessary moisture accumulation in the exhaust, and it's one way to save on fuel as well.

Think about all the car exhaust vapors you see in the winter. Cars with steam coming out of their exhaust pipes are still warming up and driving out moisture. Cars with relatively steam free exhaust emissions have been running a while and have already driven out the bulk of excess moisture that would otherwise accumulate in the exhaust system.

Mobile Auto Detailing Noise Reduction Strategy - Shop Vacuum Enclosure


The other day, I was in a high-end neighborhood in California and I noted that it was quite noisy. There were landscapers with air blowers, landscapers using weed wackers, and even a mobile detailer across the street using one of those 5 horsepower shop vacuum. "Why all the noise," I thought, this is a nice neighborhood. You see, I was surprised that the customers would put up with that noise and nonsense. Apparently they had no choice, but I would submit to you that they actually do. Further, there's opportunity here and I'd like to explain why.

If you own a mobile detailing business you should consider noise reduction strategies. Perhaps you should buy a portable generator such as the Honda which is very quiet, and use an electric pressure washer, an electric buffer, and find a way to reduce the noise of that shop vacuum. Now then, before I retired I franchised mobile auto detailing units around the country. We set up these mobile rigs on trailers, in vans, and on pickup trucks using skid units. In many locations we would clean vehicles right in office parking lots where office windows were adjacent to the cars we were cleaning.

Our customers were on the phone and having meetings so it was unacceptable to make noise. Nevertheless, those shop vacuum cleaners have a terrible squeal to them. What we did was we took a plastic trashcan cut a hole in the side for the vacuum hose and a small opening in the top with some air-conditioning vent mesh. Then we used insulation around the inside of the trashcan, the kind that is silver on one side with sticky tape on the other. This did the trick. You can hardly hear the sound, unless you stood right next to the trashcan, which was upside down covering the vacuum.

This should work just about anywhere, and we never made any noise. Best of all, we got more referrals, and folks used to tell us that they likes us better than the people they had before because we didn't make any noise. They would tell their friends, and we got more business. It was that easy. Using best management practices for mobile auto detailing and noise reduction makes sense, and it makes dollars.

Interestingly enough, you can't buy anything like this in the store, no one sells them, you have to make your own. But since I've explained how, I hope you will do this as soon as possible, and help keep the peace and quiet.

Doctors and Auto Mechanics


Depending on the circumstances the order of the title could be switched to Auto Mechanics and Doctors. To find a good mechanic in many ways can be a preventive health measure as much as seeing a doctor. Especially when you find an honest and caring mechanic. They can help lower your blood pressure, your stress level, decrease anxiety, and contribute to a more positive mood.

Over the years I've had a few good mechanics. I've had more personal dealings with them than doctors I might add. I've seen my doctor on a regular basis, my wife sees to that, but I don't really know the guy..

As far as mechanics go I've also fought with the big time car dealer mentality. They have high prices due to overhead and less than personal care because of the size of the operation. I have at times been met with out right hostility from employees of the dealership. Contrast that with the rare but not totally non-existent good honest car mechanic. Good in that he knows what he's doing and honest in that he only charges for what he did. I once took an old car of mine to this good mechanic, who's since passed away, he looked the car over and gave me a diagnosis of the problem. I didn't need to fix it right away. I asked him how much I owed him. He responded with disdain, "you don't owe me anything cause I didn't do anything". How's that for a good car mechanic. An old high school class mate of mine, who just passed away, I'm not that old by the way, was an excellent mechanic. He could have you rev the engine and tell you what the problem was. If the car wasn't running he could diagnose it from what it was doing while it was running. Where have all the good mechanics gone?

A different experience I had was with a company that specialized in break service. I had taken my car there for 10 years or so and the guy, evidently a manger, was always fair and up front with me. He could be gruff if he thought it was necessary but he was always honest. That's what kept me coming back for all those years. This last time I took my car in during the bottom of the fall out in this economic down turn. The owner was there that day. He had my car inspected and told me I needed a brake job like now and I could drive the car at my own peril. I didn't have $400 for a break job right then and there. So I switched cars with my wife, this was the car she drove. I drove that car so if any thing happened it would be on me. I'm unfortunately experienced in driving clunkers.

As soon as I had the money I took the car to a different shop to see if I could get the job done cheaper. The owner told me that I had plenty of ware left on the brake shoes and rotors. He said that he would gladly do the brake job for me but I didn't really need it. From the time the first guy told me that I needed brakes ASAP until now has been about 18 months. The car is just fine, thank you very much. I drive it from time to time make sure that I don't hear or detect the need for the brake job. Who do you think I should take the car to when it does need that brake job? That was a rhetorical question. You and me both know I'm going to take it the honest guy. The guy that had me as a loyal customer for 10 or more years lost me because of his desperation. I won' t say he was greedy because I don't know the guy. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I do know that the economy at the time had just fallen off the cliff and was almost at the bottom. So I think he was just desperate.

Moral of story: Don't get too relaxed in your dealings with any company. Many times it's the person more so than the company that makes the difference. For business owners, decisions made of desperation may lose more money than you realize.

The collision repair industry is changing fast. Not too long ago cars were not build with much plastic. Mostly, interior parts, but even much of the inside of a car was made with metal. In the past 15 to 20 years, plastics and composites have became widely used for interior, exterior, body parts, mechanical parts, etc. Plastic is not going any where, so we need to learn how to repair it properly.

Why Plastic?
The government started pushing car makers to make cars more fuel efficient. One obvious solution was to make the car lighter. This is when car makers started working with metal and other materials to reduce weight in vehicles. Lighter metal started being designed, such as high strength steel to allow the metal to have equivalent strength with much thinner metal. At the same time, engineers started brainstorming and started using light weight plastic for many of the parts that were made of steel. Apparently, the results were positive, as there is more plastic in each new body style of cars.

More Fuel Economy
To this day the government is requiring car maker to meet certain requirements in order to sell car in the US. Therefore, the automakers are going to do what ever it takes to make this happen. I believe we will see more plastic, aluminum, carbon fiber, and other composites in the years to come.

Like It Or Hate It
There are many technicians that do not like working with plastics. However, whether we like it or not, the fact that it is here to stay is a pretty safe bet. I am not trying to promote the use of plastic, but we do need to teach technicians how to properly repair it.

There are terms like convex, concave and waffle. These are terms used in the business of polishing and buffing in the auto repair shop. To most people, polishing and buffing the car is something that they do on the weekend, but in the professional world, this function takes on a much different meaning because there are so many factors to consider in creating "the perfect finish", and they require a great deal of training, more than you'd think.

The polishing shop technician has a very important job. For instance, in order to get a good finish that really shines, it is necessary to deceive the eye. This is why a good technician will never use a concentric polisher, because they move in perfect circles. An eccentric polisher is one that moves off center. It has two functions, one is to distribute the compound evenly, by pushing it into the center - this allows the compound even distribution, and it also prevents splattering of the compound and two, it confuses the eye so that the eye doesn't see any light reflected in the lines left by a conventional concentric polisher.

As far as the tools used to get that perfect finish, there is some disagreement among technicians as to what to use, the standard wool or the newer foam buffing pads. Most quality paint manufacturers have good tips on the right way to buff and polish, and you can find them on the net.

The technicians who prefer wool say that it gives the best finish, whereas the technicians who prefer the foam pads claim that they like them because they don't leave bits behind after they go. Although foam pads are new, they are evolving like anything that is new.

A recent test was done with technicians who preferred wool, and several of those technicians said they preferred the newer foam to their old wool pads. Sometimes, a technician can be attached to their way of doing things and they will say that they like their way but they have never tried anything new in years.

They will say things like the pads they tried won't remove wet or dry sand scratches from the panel, and they had to go back to wool to finish the job, but, as I mentioned earlier, old ways die-hard. So they don't like to try new products, like the newer pads that are specially designed to be more like the wool pads, but without the drawbacks.

The three main types of newer foam polish pads are convex, concave and waffle and these types of pads are designed to create a compound pocket that guides the compound toward the center of the pad and not to the outside so it won't splatter. Each of the convex, concave, or waffle pads have their own highly specialized function, but the main goal in all of this is the brilliant finish achieved by the illusion that the eye sees.
