Many people today have suffered minor paint damage and don't know what to do. What should I do if I have minor paint damage?

Well first of all the good news is it's not too serious to really effect the value or your vehicle as almost all used cars even only a few months old have some paint damage. The most common damage we see is door edge chips from opening the door and hitting something and stone chips on the front bumper from regular driving. Also minor paint damage from bumping something with your bumper.

These types of damage can easily be touched up with a touch up paint brush, and this is what we recommend. Why? Because what people do not understand is the refinishing process. I have to do a lot more "damage" to your paint to repair the damage and refinish the paint.

I will have to scruff (scratch or sand) the entire area to be refinished with a semi-coarse scuff pad so the paint adheres properly, and then I have to sand the damage and I may need to use filler in some parts of the repair, then it has to be sprayed with primer, and then based coated and finally clear coated. (If you have a difficult color the color may not be a perfect match.)

Some things to consider then. How noticeable is the damage? Also, keep in mind this may not be the only damage you have to the vehicle over the time you own it. How new is the vehicle? If it only has a few miles on it you could decreased the value of the vehicle by painting it!

Are you concerned about rust? Plastic bumpers don't rust. This may seem funny but I have had more than a few people thinking their bumper will rust. No doubt they do not realize the bumper is made of plastic but they are. The only vehicles now a days that have metal bumper covers are trucks and some SUV's and they are usually chrome. So what about touch up? Well do not take your car to a body shop thinking you can get it touched up. They are in the paint business. And if they will touch it up, do not expect it to match or look good.

Grated touch up is only going to look so so any way, but you want it to look as good as it can. I recommend you take it to the dealer and ask to have their on-site paint repair person touch up the damage. In fact if it is just a bumper and you need to have it painted I recommend you use the dealer's on site painter. Ask them first what kind of work he does. Try to find out from 2 or more sales people what they think of him.

#3 - Dragging Muffler

Vehicles that roll off the factory floors today are equipped with mufflers designed to withstand corrosion. They're usually built with stainless steel. The problem is, mufflers and their attached exhaust pipes are often held in place by rubber fasteners. Over time, the rubber can deteriorate, causing the fasteners to snap. When this happens, your muffler will drop and drag on the ground.

You can use a normal coat hanger in the place of the plastic fastener to help hold the muffler off the ground. The wire hanger is strong and won't break. As long as you fasten it securely, it can hold your muffler and exhaust pipes in place for years.

#4 - Dead Battery

If you're driving a vehicle with an automatic transmission, a dead battery usually means you're stranded until someone gives you a jumpstart. This is the reason you should always carry a set of jumper cables in your car's trunk.

With a manual transmission, you might be able to push start it. If you're alone, you'll need to position your car on a decline. If you're traveling with friends, they can give you a push. Here's how it works:

With the key in the ignition, move the gear selector to second gear and put the clutch in. When your vehicle is moving along at a decent speed, let out the clutch. How Often Should I Replace the Shocks and Struts?

Almost every time I walk into a car repair shop, I see advertisements about shocks and struts. Some mechanic shops will tell you that those are necessary for your safety, and other will tell you it gives you a smother ride, and more comforting drive on uneven roads. But the question is, do you need to invest into changing them, and if at all, how would it hurt you.

If you continue to drive on your worn out shocks and struts, you are necessarily putting yourself in risk of creating a driving hazard, however, statistical and physical studies have concluded that worn shock increase the stopping distance for a car driving on a rough surface. Different manufacturers suggest different odometer readings for changing them. However,after detailed interviewing with my network of trusted mechanics, I came to the conclusion that it is almost impossible to a certain point in the car's life that the the struts and shocks are to be replaced. Some factory shocks may show aging signs after only 30,000 or 40,000 miles. Struts usually last around 50,000 or 60,000 miles. Shocks and struts do not require replacing at specific mileage intervals like filters or spark plugs. This is simply because the damping characteristics of the parts gradually deteriorates over time. And since you are driving the car pretty much everyday, the decline in the quality of the drive is going to happen with out you noticing.

Would you like to know if you need to change those parts without going to mechanic?? A preliminary way of testing "bounce test". This is where you would rock and release the bumper or the body. If the cars continues to gyrate more than one or two times then the parts are aging, and it's time to replace them. You can also diagnose the parts by answering the following questions.
