How to STOP Your Car From Being Stolen!

Recently one of our wonderful customers had their Lexus RX stolen from her church parking lot. The thief broke her window, found the valet key in the glove box, then drove off with the car. The vehicle was recovered and due to damage was towed to our Denver auto body repair shop. The valet key was never recovered.

The valet key or spare key is a flat key that oftentimes is mistakenly left in the cover of the Owner's Manual. It will start the car and open the doors just like your regular key.

After completing the repairs on this particular vehicle, we sent the car to the Lexus dealer to have the vehicle rekeyed. Rekeying a car means having ALL the locks and keys changed and the car reprogrammed which renders the old keys useless. Keep in mind the thief may still be in possession of the valet key and could steal the car again or the contents if the vehicle is not rekeyed. And in this particular case, the chances are high that this person might go back to the same church and try it again.

Unfortunately, the insurance company declined to pay to rekey the vehicle! The customer is now faced with two options, paying their $1,000.00 deductible and over $800.00 to have the vehicle rekeyed or live with the knowledge that someone else out there may still have the key to her car.

We called several people at the insurance company to get them to re-consider their position to no avail. This is the first time we have ever had an insurance company decline such a necessary repair.

Recently we spoke with two insurance adjusters from other insurance companies who indicated that rekeying the vehicle would have been covered in this situation.

We also found getting an answer from other Insurance companies on how they would handle the same situation was not so easy either. Many policies don't directly address the question of coverage in this situation. It seems like it is up to internal policies within the insurance company.

After reviewing my personal auto policy with Amica Mutual Insurance Company, it clearly spells out, "We will pay for lock replacement on your covered auto without a deductible if your keys are lost or stolen."

So, to prevent your car from being stolen make sure you do not have any spare keys in your car. Keep your valet key on your keychain if you need it for valet parking purposes. As a courtesy to our collision customers, we now inspect our client's cars for extra keys and have them removed from the vehicle. Finally, check with your insurance agent about your coverage on rekeying before it's too late!

Donny Seyfer, a skilled mechanic, has been fixing cars for several decades using his internal database. But now, he has his laptop as his reliable ally in doing auto repairs. To make a living fixing the new generation of computer-controlled cars, Seyfer, 43, an expert in the field, had to become something like a technical wizard. He no longer needs wrench when a customer drives in with auto problems; he just needs a laptop.

Seyfer matched wits with the onboard computer of a 2006 Lincoln Zephyr. He also checked independent information services used by mechanics like Alldata, Identifix and the International Automotive Technician's Network. However, his queries were unanswered. He studied a repair Web site operated by the Ford Motor Company. Fortunately, he recalled the solution. "I remembered a similar model that you had to tell the computer whether it was front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive," Seyfer said. "I punched in that information and it cleared the codes."

As the modern time demands, auto mechanics should be equipped with expertise in diagnostic codes and web-based data-sharing. He should also be updated hence he must participate in online forums to keep up with the technology. Territo also divulged that 70 to 80 percent of post-warranty repairs are performed by independent repairers.

Mike Brewster, owner of Gil's Garage in Burnt Hills, N.Y., has been paying subscription fees for independent services like Alldata, Mitchell's and Identifix. Said services usually cost $150 a month. Brewster will buy 24-hour access to a manufacturer's site only as needed. "It's just a part of the cost of doing business," Brewster said. "But having current information available is such a pleasure."

"The trend toward students who are adept at computers, math and reading has been going on for a number of years," Seyfer said. "Who would have thought you could use a laptop as a diagnostic tool? Now it's the first thing we whip out."

My Car Won't Start Sometimes and My Mechanic Can't Seem to Help Me

I have a question to ask you about my 1994 Mazda B-3000. The engine intermittenly does not start. When you turn the key you never know what you're going to get. The starter turns but sometimes the engine does not start. If I'm lucky enough to be parked on a hill (it's a standard) in first gear or reverse, once you get it rolling and pop the clutch it starts without much trouble. It seems to have plenty of power from the battery, (lights, etc. all work). Someone told me it's a flywheel problem but my mechanic said he didn't think so, and is unable to diagnose the problem. He said he took the starter out and checked it and found nothing wrong. What do you think? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Very Frusterated, Joe D.

If you can start the engine via push starting....it has to be a problem with one or more of the following:

1. Battery does not have enough juice to fully engage and spin starter motor fast enough

2. Starter motor is weak, and does not engage and turn engine

3. Flywheel has a bad spot on it, when you turn the key , you hear the starter motor turning...and usually hear a grinding noise because the starter is trying to grab a piece of the flywheel that is missing

4. There is a starter relay that is bad or some other electrical problem that is not allowing electricity from the battery to flow to the starter

5. Bad connection at the battery and battery cables. You can check this yourself...make sure the cables are clean and tight! You should not be able to move or wiggle the battery cables on the battery with your hands. Make sure you do not have a ring on your finger or a watch on your wrist when working around a battery...I have a few scars on my fingers to prove that batteries can HURT!

I would have the battery "LOAD" tested, and a starter "DRAW" test done by your mechanic with the items on the vehicle....don't take them off the vehicle to test them.

A quick "Shade Tree Mechanic" test to diagnose a bad starter: when the engine is in "no start" mode. Turn on the headlights (make sure they are good and bright...or you have a bad battery), then turn the ignition key trying to start the engine. If the headlights DIM, but stay lit, then you probably have a bad starter motor, if you turn the ignition key and the headlights go OUT, you probably have a bad battery or loose or dirty battery cables.

ALWAYS check the battery cables first, 9 out of 10 times it is a loose or dirty battery cable...that has been over looked, that causes a no start or intermittent starting problem like the one you are having.

Car Engine Does Not Crank Over - Auto Repair Tips

I remember years ago a customer of mine called because she was stranded at McDonalds. Her car wouldn't start, it wouldn't even crank over. Luckily I was only about five minutes away and was able to drop by to check her car for her. The battery terminals were after-market, the type that has two 7/16" bolts that clamp over the bare cable end. These are a quick easy repair for the battery cable but sometimes they do loosen over time. That was exactly what had happened in this case. I was able to just tighten the terminals where they clamped to the bare cable ends and she was on her way.

A car that doesn't turn over at all, usually has a battery related problem. Many cars are towed to auto repair shops every year due to loose or corroded battery terminals. If the car engine doesn't crank over at all, the first thing to check is the battery and terminal connections. Here's a quick auto repair tip, turn the lights on and try the horn. If the battery is any good at all this will be a quick preliminary check. If there's no horn and no lights, try wiggling the battery connections. I leave the lights on while trying this so I can tell if I'm making a better connection when moving the battery terminals.

Still no luck? A load test with a battery tester is the next step after checking the connections at the battery. Many times a battery will show signs of failure by turning the engine over slowly when it's beginning to fail, this is an early warning to have the battery tested. Unfortunately other times batteries will just fail with no prior warning. Temperature changes can sometimes reveal a problem with a battery that otherwise may go unnoticed. An increase or decrease of temperature will typically send cars in droves to the repair shop or parts stores with sluggishly starting cars. Batteries will need to have a good charge before they can be properly tested. Modern battery testers will indicate if the battery has a sufficient charge to be checked.

Alternators that are not charging properly can cause a car to have similar symptoms. It's always a good idea to check the alternator to make sure the output is within the manufacturer's specifications. The parts store or auto repair shops have the test equipment to check the alternator output for you. They will check the amperage, volts, diode pattern and check to see if the alternator has a draw or short that may be excessively draining the battery.

Starters can draw excessive amps or have an open circuit completely. After checking to make sure a good battery is installed, check the big cable connection at the starter which is the 12v one that comes directly from the battery. Then check at the starter solenoid (the small wire) to see if it is getting power when the ignition is turned to the start position. If power is going to the starter solenoid but the starter is not engaging, more than likely the starter has an open circuit or is binding. Sometimes the starter can be tapped with a hammer while the ignition is in the start position to get the car to start. This is basically to get the car into the shop for starter replacement. I've used this trick many times over the years to keep from having to push the car into my service bay. The starter can also be tested to see if it is creating too much of a draw on the battery. This can happen when the starter begins to to drag or bind and puts too much of a toll on the battery. The amp draw is measured with a battery and electrical system tester to see if it is excessive.

My tips and tricks have been picked up over the years with real hands on experience. Many auto techs don't like to share their techniques, but I've been selling tools since 2005 and it's time to share what I've learned during my time as a Master Automotive Technician. I hope my article helps many people to figure out what's going on with their car and just maybe help prevent them from being stranded.

Training for Car Detailers

Introduction

Be sure you do two things before you even touch a customer's car:

Learn a set of professional skills, including: the best way to bring engines to like-new, best way to remove carpet and upholstery spots, how to destroy smells, how best to polish as well as wax paint to the point of a better-than-new look, how to get rid of water spots, how to detail "nooks and crannies" (dials, vents, toggles, under seats, etc).

Buy professional gear. Don't spend too much! There are just a handful of completely necessary items: wet/dry shop-vac, Cyclo polisher and waxer, electric power washing unit, and the all-important air compressor.

Understand professional marketing tactics. Today's detail business must have good, working relationships with local vehicle businesses (dealers, mechanics, reconditioning shops, and body shops). It must also have a professional, visible website.

There are 3 resources you can find for training as a detailer:

• Learn from the house.

Let's take a moment to look closer at your options.

Option 1: Apprenticeship

If you asked me, I'd say that this is the most thorough means of getting the business knowledge. Simultaneously, it is also the toughest to arrange.

It will require that you labor for 6 weeks at an reconditioning shop more than 1 hour from where you live. Contact auto reconditioning shops outside of your area and explain that you want to start your own shop. Be clear that you will NOT be a competitor even if you do happen to be starting a mobile car detailing business. Offer to work at minimum wage or even less in exchange for total immersion in the technical and business workings of their shop.

For the first weeks, you'll ideally be performing actual detailing: interior, out, and under hoods. You will encounter all the common cases (beverage spills, dog hair, food spots) that drive into a pro shop. You will get much faster at making them clean again as the owner shares his top car detailing tips.

3 weeks into your apprenticeship, you should start to learn the business aspect of the shop: what things to buy, where to get them, how much you should pay for them, how to get your name out there, keys to running a website, how to advertise to dealerships, how to treat customers, how and at what point to run specials, how to handle complaints...all of the plethora of issues that show up at a detail business daily. This portion of your training is far more critical than the first weeks in which you learned the fundamentals of how to detail a car.

At the end of 6 weeks, you should have adequate knowledge to do it on your own. But expect plenty of new issues to come up in the first half year that you will have to confront and succeed at fixing on your own.

On the job training only works - but only if you are ready to drive to a distant shop for 6 long, barely or not paid weeks, and only if you have a shop owner on board. I repeat: you may have to work for nothing (ie, an internship) to get a detail shop owner to agree to this.

Pros: Completely all-encompassing, hands-on learning in a real detail business.

Cons: Very hard to locate a shop owner receptive to training you.

Option 2: Reconditioning Schools

There are lots of detailing schools around the country which specialize in training prospective business owners with formal detailing lectures and seminars:

Detail King - located in PA.
RightLook - based in San Diego, CA.
The Total Pros - based out of L.A., CA.
Detailing Success - located in Big Bear City, CA.

Enroll for 16 hours in training classes, if not more. Be ready to pay at least $1200, including travel costs, and be gone for at least three days. Make sure that you pay for and get adequate marketing training - since it's marketing-not your ability to do good detail work-which will make or break your business.

I have heard good things about these 4 companies, but at the top seems to be Detailing Success in Big Bear-run by Renny Doyle.

Pros: Doing based learning. Schools offer technical and marketing training from teachers who have done and seen everything there is to see.

Cons: A lot of money. Not a truly real-world experience in which you can learn how to deal with real-world customers and real-world issues (broken tools, irremovable odors, customer troubles, etc.)

Option 3: Learn at Home

There are books and DVDs you can find on Amazon.

Theses books and DVDs offer excellent technical training. They do show you ways in which to detail cars fast and thoroughly. However, they are mostly lacking in marketing training. They'll cover marketing and sales, in general, however they offer not enough specific advice. For example, they recommend shelling out for phone book advertising. Phone book advertising is all but history in the car detailing business today.

Pros: Price and availability. A truly practical way to use your time and funding.
Cons: Doesn't have a hands-on component.

Conclusion

How one chooses to train ultimately depends on budget and time availability. There isn't objectively a right or wrong way to gain the skills needed to run a detailing business.

Here are 2 important pieces of wisdom for new detailers:

No need to overspend on supplies and equipment. It's possible to do excellent work with only a few items of hardware and chemicals.

The real training will happen in your first 6 months as a detailer, independent of what method you used prior to going into business. Every vehicle is unique. Each customer (along with what they're looking for) is different. After 6 months you can expect to have gained a whole lot of confidence.

When I say "into the corporation", I am referring to helping the corporate employees with their windshield repair service needs. One definite advantage to working with corporations is the fact that there are a lot of people in one place. (and usually a large percentage of them have full coverage insurance)

There are a lot of people with insurance (highest paying repairs) that work inside of larger businesses. The fact that they are all in one place is a big advantage.

The challenge comes when you try to talk to anyone but the receptionist, especially when it is a manufacturing business. Access to the employees is almost impossible. But, there is a way!

One of the best ways to start any negotiation process is to think of what the other person really wants out of the deal. And, when you think of corporations, you must follow this rule.

Talk to any corporate human resource director (formally the personnel department) and you will find that one of their main jobs is to make sure that the employees are receiving their benefits.

When they have benefits that they can give their employees, and not have to pay for them, how do you think they will respond?

Corporate America is looking for ways to enhance their benefit program for their employees. They are looking for ways to keep their employees happy. Most companies simply cannot afford to give them all of the benefits that they would like to give.

Certainly, employees are always wanting more and somewhere in between they meet. But, in the process, there is always room for more benefits and services for the employees.

Most day workers have shifts that allow them little time to do anything but work. The weekends are filled with getting the things done that they didn't have time to do during the week. That is where you come in.

CONVENIENCE AND SERVICE

Having someone come to the office and repair windshields, handle all of the billing and paperwork, is a great service and convenience that many human resource managers and directors would love to offer as a "free service" to their employees. What else can they say? There is no way for them to lose at this deal. In fact, they may be your first customers!

I started a program like this with a local firm (they employ over 3000 employees). The approach we used was through the Human Resource department and their personnel. It went something like this:

THE APPROACH

I called the secretary and asked to speak with the manager. I introduced myself and ask him/her for a time when I could show her a program that would benefit the employees. I also mentioned the fact that this service would be free to the employees and to the company. In the introduction I mentioned that I will take the posture that the service I am rendering is sponsored by the company (an example of the company giving more to their employees).

Now without going into greater detail with the receptionist, I secure a 15 minute appointment. Our primary objective in the first phone call is to get the appointment without giving away the exactness of the plan (it is for that reason we must have our "meeting" and go over the "details").

THE MEETING

At the meeting, make sure you take a sample of how the insurance companies waive the deductible and pay for the repair. Some insurance companies have great third party endorsement brochures, that shows how they encourage the process. You can get these brochures, free of charge from most local car insurance agent or claim offices. Look the claim office up in the phone book or call a local agent, they will tell you where the claims office is.

Explain just what it is you hope to accomplish. Start with the benefits that the corporation or business will realize. It is really a three step process.

THREE STEPS OF SUCCESS

1. Identify the need - Let the manager know that you are aware of the busy schedule that the company has and the fact that it is difficult for employees to get away during the day. (if not impossible-and employers do not like it when their employees take "personal days").

2. Show that the need can be fulfilled - Now this is where your service business comes into play. You can have your technicians (or just yourself) come to the company property and perform the repairs while the employees are working!

3. Tell them how you will accomplish this - There are several approaches to the actual logistics involved when you need to get the paper work done and do the repair, you can do all of this work on the spot or you can do it in advance. Explain the options to the manager and help him/her make the decision that would best suit their needs and the needs of the company.

Finding what the customer's needs are is the most important process in obtaining the account.

Now, a word on "obtaining the account", you are "creating" a new account. You are beginning something that chances are, has never been done before, it will be new to them and they will love it!

A NO-COST BENEFIT TO THE EMPLOYEES!

When you present this program to them, in the manner outlined, they will appreciate the fact that this is a no-cost benefit that they can offer to their employees. A convenience to the employees, a great service. Everyone has had the hassle of having to take a half of a day off and try to schedule work done on their car. Make sure to emphasize the "no cost benefit for the employees, a benefit offered by the employer".

You don't care who gets the credit right? Just concern yourself with the earnings, let the personnel manager take all of the credit.

THE ACTUAL WORK

You will find that having some little forms that the employees can fill out in advance, will be the choice of some managers. (with the basic info on it, that you will need to determine whether or not their insurance company will pay for the repair, ie..insurance company name, policy number, and comprehensive deductible.) You can designate a certain day when you will return and do all of the repairs.

You may want to start this process during their lunch hour (or at least suggest it) and see how it goes. Some companies will also want to see how it goes. Having a no hassle trial period will be good for them and for you. Remember to always bend over backwards to accommodate the customer's needs. You want to show them that you are there to serve.

If they can use the pre-information forms you provide, it will save you some time and make the process easier for all.

When you suggest this to the person who you are trying to convince, there may or may not be a look of dismay or complication on their face. Watch for any bewildering look on their face and reassure them of how easy this is. If you still have the feeling that this is too complicated for them or that they are overwhelmed or too busy, then offer to do the paperwork when you get there to do the repairs.

ON THE SPOT APPROVAL

When you have determined that you will have a "Chippin Day" for the employees, and you have decided to do the work of finding out who the insurance company is and all of that information, assure the person that in most cases (99.9%) you can approve the customer's repair on the spot. Make sure to mention the fact that if for some reason, they are later not covered or if the coverage does not go through, that you will not go back and charge the customer for the repair.

If you lose a couple of repairs, that is okay, because you will do so many others, it shouldn't matter to you. This is one way to keep everyone happy and will save you the appearance of being a "nit-picker". This extra mile service attitude will go along way toward developing a good, long enduring relationship.

This will also help you, in several other ways:

1. You can plan "Chippin Days" on regular intervals throughout the year, at the same company.

2. It will be a positive thing that the manager will remember. It will be a good idea to ask the satisfied managers if they would mind giving you a favorable recommendation, should someone call. Now you can see how you can piggy back this service to many companies, through positive referrals.

SHIFTS

Depending on the company, you may want to offer to have two or three different times or two or three different days when you will perform the repairs. Having a day planned two or three weeks in advance will give everyone a chance to get their ducks in a row (including you). Make sure to follow up every week and even a few days prior to the event to help them keep it on the top of their agenda. If you do not follow up they may get busy and forget! Trust me on this. I know from experience.

You may suggest that they put a little notice in the employee's mail box or pay check, announcing the fact that the service will be offered, and give the employees a chance to call personnel and "sign up"!

THE SUBTLE APPROACH TO CORPORATIONS AND BUSINESSES

Another way to have the employees take advantage of your service is to have posters made and posted in the lunch room or employee room. Although this is not nearly as effective as having an employee day, it is exposure. I had posters made that emphasized the fact that the service is an employee benefit, sponsored by their employer.

Remember having the posture of benefits offered by the company? You will notice that throughout a lot of the approaches mentioned in this book, I feel it so important to offer this service in the least threatening, most effective way.

Also make sure that you mention to the employees that they are entitled (everyone wants what they are entitled to, right?) to special treatment like a discount or other special treatment, since they are employees of the company in question. Make them realize, some how, that going through their company, they will get more benefits.

CASH DISCOUNTS

When the employee does not have the insurance coverage that will pay for the repair, then offer to have a cash discount available at the time of repair (of course, the additional discount is only offered to employees of the company you are servicing). Some employees will choose to pay cash, even though they have insurance coverage. For whatever reason the customer chooses, make sure you offer a special cash price.

Principles and Effects of Overheating

Overheating is a major engine problem that can cause permanent damage if not prevented after the first occurrence. This is characterized by sudden failure of the engine because of extremely high temperatures, causing smoke or fire in the engine bay. This situation happens when the heat generated by the engine exceeds the normal temperature range of 195 to 220 degrees Fahrenheit.

Heat plays an important role in the engine's performance. Whether it is powered by gasoline or diesel, the engine has a heat limit to maintain. The mechanical energy needed to run the pistons and other engine components is generated by the pressure produced by heat of the burning fuel. The amount of energy generated is actually based on the heat produced.

More heat produced means greater engine efficiency. However, the materials composing the engine have thermal coefficient limits, so these parts can't stand heat above 220 degrees without detonating. In many highly-developed cities like West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, most auto repair shops blame overheating on an inefficient cooling system.

A coolant system in the engine acts as a temperature stabilizer. This system is composed of several parts including an electric cooling fan, a radiator, and a coolant pump. But are you aware that one out of five customers move away each year? And a certain number also change shops for a variety of reasons. It's not your fault, but you still have to cope with these facts. So, do you have a Yellow Page ad, or, if not, isn't it time you did? You have an emergency business, like it or not, and you know that the average person uses the local directory to find one.
