Running a business can be an exciting venture. You get to call all of the shots and you don't really have to report to anyone. However, this does not come without a great deal of responsibility. Reasons Your Car's Engine May Be Misfiring

When one or more of the cylinders in your engine misfires, you'll notice a hard idle, hard start, or hesitation during acceleration. In some cases, you'll experience all three. While idling, your engine might shudder so violently that it shakes your entire steering column. While driving, you'll notice a marked lag in performance. These problems will be more pronounced if you turn on your A/C or use any other accessories that add to the load placed upon your engine. The question is, what causes a misfire in the first place?

There are three primary reasons for a misfiring cylinder: insufficient spark, compression, or fuel. The challenge is to determine which factor is to blame.

Insufficient Spark For Ignition

Your engine undergoes a 4-stroke combustion process that results in the energy needed to turn your car's crankshaft. Air and fuel travel into each cylinder. The intake and exhaust valves close, sealing the combustion chamber. A piston lies at the bottom, and begins to rise, compressing the air-fuel mixture. When the piston reaches the topmost point of its path, a spark plug ignites the mixture and causes a miniature explosion. Vapors expand within the chamber and push the piston downward. This rotates the crankshaft and powers your vehicle.

Note that the process described above requires the spark plug to ignite the compressed air-fuel blend. If this spark is unavailable, or too weak, the mixture cannot be ignited. This causes a misfire.

Insufficient spark can be traced to several possible root causes. For example, the plug may be worn, corroded, or damaged; the plug wire may also be worn, preventing voltage from reaching the spark plug; or the distributor cap may have become cracked or otherwise damaged. Each of these factors will prevent voltage from being delivered to the combustion chamber.

If you intend to fix the problem without the help of a mechanic, you'll first need to identify which cylinder is misfiring. You can accomplish this by letting your car idle and unhooking the plug wires, one at a time. You'll notice a change in the idle speed after disengaging each good cylinder. When you unhook a plug wire and notice no change, you'll have found the misfiring cylinder. Check the plug and the plug wire. You'll need an ohmmeter to check the plug wire's resistance.

Compression Leaks In The Engine

Recall that during the 4-stroke combustion process, the air-fuel mixture is compressed by the rising piston. In order for this to occur properly, there should be very little compression leakage from the chamber (a small amount of leakage is normal). If a sizable leak has developed, the air-fuel mix cannot be sufficiently compressed for the ignition stroke.

Once you have identified the misfiring cylinder, perform a compression test (a manual tester costs less than $30 at most auto supply shops). If you discover a leak, the cause will likely be due to a bad exhaust valve. You'll likely need to have the guide seals replaced. As a side note, if you detect a leak in two neighboring cylinders, the culprit is probably a failing head gasket.

Malfunctioning Fuel Injectors

If you have checked the spark plug, plug wire, distributor cap, and compression, and have been unable to find a problem, the misfire is likely due to insufficient fuel. The best place to begin troubleshooting is with your fuel injection system - specifically, the injector for the misfiring cylinder. Assuming enough fuel is reaching the injector, the most common issue is a blockage in the nozzle. Such blockages are often caused by deposits left behind when you turn off your engine.

Once you have ruled out ignition and compression as possible causes of the misfire, it's best to have an experienced mechanic check the fuel system. If you can identify a clog in the injector, replace the unit. Otherwise, insufficient fuel could be caused by a failing oxygen sensor, malfunctioning powertrain control module (PCM), or a bad fuel pump. Your mechanic will have the necessary equipment for diagnosing which factor is causing the problem.

Should You Have Your Car's Engine Repaired Or Replaced?

Having to replace an air pump is inconvenient, but tolerable. Replacing a muffler or alternator is more costly and thus, more frustrating. But it's still bearable. Your car's engine, on the other hand, is among the few assemblies (your transmission is the other one) where a failure can crush your budget.

Your engine will not last forever, of course. Depending on how hard you drive it and the number of miles you put on it, you can expect it to last between 100,000 miles and twice that amount. If you keep your vehicle long enough, it will eventually develop major problems.

For example, if the assembly has 130,000 miles, a history of valve or piston problems, and a chronic misfire, repairing it will be costly. The mechanic might need to perform extensive work on the cylinders. He may need to align the engine block and replace the valves.

Also, with an overhaul, the entire assembly must be dismantled. The individual pieces are disassembled, so the mechanic can check for blemishes, fissures, or other structural problems. The components that are in good condition are then cleaned. The ones that are in poor condition are replaced. Once the parts have either been cleaned or replaced, the assembly is put back together.

This is painstaking work. An engine overhaul requires an enormous amount of time and effort. This is the reason a lot of mechanics will strongly suggest having the engine replaced.

Differences Between New And Remanufactured Engines

You can buy a used assembly from a junkyard, but doing so may be dangerous. There's no way to be certain whether there are problems hidden from view, especially with engines that have a lot of miles. Even if you find a used assembly with low miles and a limited warranty, it will usually be a less-than-ideal option. The price will be consistent with a remanufactured unit, which will have been brought up to OEM standards. At that point, you're better off investing in the latter.

A new engine is exactly how it sounds. Every individual piece is new. The valves, pistons, engine block, connecting rods, and other parts have never been used.

A remanufactured unit is nearly as good (and far less expensive). Remans are used assemblies that have been dismantled, closely examined, and carefully cleaned. Most of the pieces that wear over time (e.g. timing belt, gaskets, etc.) are replaced. Then, the assembly is rebuilt and tested to ensure it meets OEM standards.

Which option is best? If your budget is limited, a remanufactured engine that has been brought up to OEM specifications is an ideal solution. It will get your car back on the road without the high cost associated with a new assembly.

What are Your CFM Requirements?

If you're new to air compressors and using pneumatic tools in general, then you may not be aware of your cfm (cubic feet per minute) requirements. Every air tool has a certain cfm rating and this tells you what is required to power them. For instance, tools like pneumatic nail guns and staplers have a lower cfm rating and require less flow or output than do sand blasters or a pneumatic grinder, which require not only more power but a continuous source of it.

A good rule of thumb is to find the tool you use that has the highest cfm rating and use that in determining which compressor you choose. If you find a machine you like that will power your hardest tool, then it will also power your other tools that have lower cfm ratings.

When buying a used air compressor, the most important thing you can do is to find out the exact history of the machine. Ask to see any maintenance records and inquire if there have been any replacement parts. If the unit is not local, then it is your right and duty to ask to see photos if the seller has not yet provided any. If at all possible, ask to see video of the compressor being used to see it in action. Know if this machine is even a viable option before you drive however many miles to check it out in person.

When is a Tear Not a Repair?

It's not very cold out there yet, but it is believed a cold winter is ahead of us, which is bad news for cabriolet owners with plastic rear windows.

The freezing cold weather tends to make the plastic windows very brittle and more prone to damage - this is reflected in the number of customers we get in the December & January months.

It is one of the most annoying things when you realise that your perfect looking hood has a hole in the plastic rear window! The hood looks great, except for the hole/rip/tear in the window. It seems a shame to have to replace the whole hood if it's just the window that needs replacing. Luckily it is often possible to only replace the rear window, rather than the whole hood!

Every car design has a different type of hood, sometimes there's even a choice of hoods with a whole list of different types of rear window. The Mazda MX5 for example comes in a choice of material - vinyl or cloth - and a choice of window - plastic, heated glass, zipped plastic, non-zipped plastic, zipped heated glass, non-zipped heated glass and some other variations.

9 out of 10 times a plastic rear window can be replaced, some easier than others. For example the BMW E30, BMW E36 and the BMW Z3 mostly come with a zip going right round the window. This means that the only labour costs involved is unzipping the old and zipping in the new rear window - a 45-minute job. You have to make sure tough that it is an OEM window so that you can be sure that it fits properly.

The Mercedes 129 however is not as simple as that. The window is stitched into the actual hood, wherefore the whole hoods needs to be removed in order for the stitching to be unpicked and the new window re-stitched. There is a lot of work involved here, so the price for replacing this window can be quite high, but this is still a cheaper option than getting a whole new hood.

The Mazda MX5 also has a zip, but only at the top of the hood and does not form part pf the window assembly. The window is stitched into the hood. This means that like the Mercedes hood the hood needs to be completely removed, the stitching unpicked, and the window replaced.

The Peugeot 306 has a very interesting way of attaching the window to the hood - it is melted into place using electrodes. There are wires running round the rim of the window through which a current is passed which in turn heats it up and bonds it to the hood. We suspect only Peugeot garages are able to bond a window in this way.

It is still possible for us to replace the window, but not using the electrode method. What we would do is remove the old window, and replace it by stitching a new one in place. The only difference here is that the stitching is visible.

Some hoods have a bonded rear window, which means that window is bonded to the hood using heat. A special press-welder does this and bonds and presses the heated molten plastic into the hooding material. ETC owns such a tool, which enables us to bond windows into the hood. The whole hood needs to be removed to do this so that the old window can be taken out, and a new window can be bonded into place.

The other day we had an old MGB come in with a small hole in the rear plastic window. The owner wanted us to replace the damaged section only but sadly this particular hood has a rear-window that covers both the rear window and the side windows. We advised our potential customer to buy a new hood, as the labour cost to unstitch the whole section would cost more than to buy a brand new vinyl MG hood.

With the approach of spring, which often brings daily temperature fluctuations that can be as much as 20 degrees from early morning to late afternoon, many drivers will see that small chip in their windshields start to spread into a major crack. As the windshield and its frame expand and contract differently with temperature changes, stresses develop in the glass and become focused at the windshield's weakest point, namely a chip. When the stresses become too great, they are released as a crack. The same thing can happen after a particularly cold night when the driver cranks on the heat in the morning to defrost the windshield.

A windshield chip or crack not only compromises the driver's and passengers' safety, by impairing visibility and structural integrity in low-speed crashes, but is often (an expensive) ticketable offense in most states. Chip repair is relatively fast and easy. The procedure itself takes only 15-20 minutes and is a permanent fix for chips and small cracks. An easy rule of thumb: if the damage is smaller than a dollar bill it is most likely repairable. Damage areas bigger than a dollar bill will require windshield replacement.

In most cases, the repair to you is essentially free. The repair facility that you choose will ask for your insurance information and will handle the processing of your claim through your carrier. As mentioned before, most insurance companies are only too happy to cover the cost of a chip repair, knowing that this will save them big costs down the road. Many retailers also offer low or discounted "cash" pricing for chip repairs.

Types Of Damage To Look Out For

• Windshield Chips are usually small notches or grooves in the glass. Chips do not continue completely through the glass. When chips are small, they are usually easy to fix, but after continued temperature fluctuation cycles or flexing of the car due to a vicious pothole or rough road conditions they can begin to spread.

• Windshield Cracks are curved or straight lines that extend across the windshield. Cracks can extend from the front and back of the windshield. They can also exist on only one side of the windshield. Windshield cracks should be repaired as soon as possible because they can grow promptly.

It is impossible for them to keep track of every claim and they can't force you to get your car fixed. The only way the insurance companies can combat this is by writing their initial estimates a little on the lighter side. I've had many appraisers tell me that their company actually trains them to feel the customer out and if they think they probably wont have their car repaired to write the estimate for as little as possible. Obviously if you have a brand new BMW your going to get it fixed but if you a 1984 Toyota Corolla with 350,000 miles on it you are probably going to keep the money, right?

In a perfect scenario your car could be repaired in as little as a few hours. Well, the world is not perfect and depending on your insurance company's original estimate it may take several days to get an appraiser to come back out and re-write their estimate. This process is known as a Supplement. Usually on the back page of your estimate there are instruction for filling a supplement. Often times we get twice as much money as the original estimate. This is very important because without this additional money you may get a shop to do a complete repair or worse you may have to pay money out of pocket.

The next issue is "deductibles." You have a contract with your insurance company that you will pay the first $500, $1000, or whatever your deductible is, towards the repair of your vehicle. This money is always deducted out of the check your insurance company gives you and they leave it up to you to pay it or find a company that will fix it for less. Essentially any company that repairs your vehicle without requiring you to pay a deductible is giving you a "discount." This is completely legal and in fact most PDR companies will not require you to pay your deductible. Make sure you get any promises made to you in writing. I also suggest you get an estimated length of repair time. At my shop we always provide a customer with a written quote of the exact amount due for the repair or we give the customer a guarantee in writing that we will complete the repair for the negotiated amount the insurance company issues payment for. If we file a supplement it is expressed that we earned that money in addition to the original estimate. If a shop is unwilling to put their promises in writing then you need to find a new shop.
