An Honest Auto Mechanic

An honest auto mechanic can sometimes be tough to find. No harder than finding an honest lawyer, some would say, but my regular readers already have that department covered! My wife and I have run into a series of car "issues" lately, and it got me thinking about the different ways an uninformed consumer can be abused by a dishonest mechanic. This month's article will focus on ways to make the often painful and expensive world of car repairs a little easier for my readers.

There are three golden rules for any consumer when dealing with an auto mechanic:

1) get it in writing;
2) get it in writing; and
3) get it in writing.

If you follow these three rules, you will by WAY ahead of the game in case of problems or disputes "down the road" (if you'll pardon the pun.)

Specifically, you should always get a WRITTEN authorization for towing or inspection of your vehicle PRIOR to the time it is towed or inspected. This authorization should cover several issues, including: the exact cost and description of the towing, inspection or diagnosis to be completed; an explanation of which charges (if any) will be waived if you elect to have the repairs completed; a statement that the car will be satisfactorily reassembled if you elect not to have the repairs done and/or a statement that all inspected parts will be saved and stored for you; and most importantly, a statement that the authorization for towing or inspection is NOT an authorization for repair and that a separate, written work authorization will be required prior to the commencement of any repairs. You should ALWAYS require a separate repair authorization prior to the time you begin repairs. Although you may be asked to sign the inspection authorization at the same time you sign the work authorization, my advice is NOT to do so. I mean, if you're going to do that, why bother with the inspection authorization at all?

Your work authorization should address certain items as well: a complete description of the repair work to be done (obviously); the stated fee for the work to be done, broken down by parts and labor; a full disclosure of all other costs (storage, shop fees, etc.) as well as a statement that all costs and fees are disclosed in the authorization; a statement as to whether the parts will be new from the manufacturer, new aftermarket parts, used or rebuilt; the specific terms of the warranty for the repair work; the method of payment accepted for the repairs; and an indication that all parts removed and/or replaced will be stored and saved for your inspection (unless they are required for exchange, such as brake pads.)

There are a few common problems to watch out for. For example, you should never let the mechanic disassemble your vehicle or put it up on the rack if you do not have a written authorization for inspection as described above. At that point, you run the risk of authorizing overpriced repairs or getting your vehicle back partially or improperly reassembled. Also, your mechanic may call you for "verbal" approval to amend or change the work authorization. While time and convenience may tempt you to take this shortcut, I would highly recommend that all changes to work authorizations be in writing and signed or initialed by both parties. This is the only way to insure that misunderstandings do not blossom into increased revenue for your friendly local lawyer.

If you do have a problem with a mechanic, or if the final charges exceed the written authorization and you feel you have been cheated, it is probably best to go ahead and pay the bill. If you do this, be sure to write a few words making your protest clear on the bill and on your check if you can. If need be, you can go back and dispute your credit card charges or sue the mechanic in small claims court after you drive away. Keep in mind that a mechanic has a lien on your vehicle to insure payment of his charges. Please do NOT pay with a check and then put a "stop payment" order in place, as this will likely end up with your car being repossessed.

Remember, a nice smile and firm handshake does not always translate into quality service delivered with honesty and integrity. Keeping all agreements and authorizations in writing and being firm about your rights is hard work, but it sure does beat riding a bicycle to work on a rainy day.

Auto Repair - Charging for Convenience Despite Necessity

Auto repair is a necessity, right? Cars need to be maintained, they need repairs, and they need service. Certainly convenience is nice, but it's an added bonus. One would think that convenience and the necessity of auto repair are indeed complementary - albeit rare. What few understand, however, is that the auto repair industry charges for convenience. In other words, you could and should be able to get your car repaired for less - sometimes lots less - but because you broke down here and not there, you pay more.

Repair prices vary greatly from shop to shop for a numbers of reasons (discussed at length in RepairTrust literature). The focus here is the mind-set in the auto repair industry that it is OK to charge customers extra for convenience.

For perspective, here's a break down of an actual transaction.

After a careful analysis of a $1600 auto repair bill, it was clear that $200 of it was excessive. The excessive charges were as follows: an extra $10 for a battery (compared to MSRP - Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price), an extra $125 for an alternator (compared to MSRP), and an additional $65 in labor (compared to industry guidelines).

While this particular customer was a busy executive and was glad for the quick service and convenience, what about the single mom struggling to make ends meet? An additional $200 in repairs might mean a late rent check.

Convenience charges are extremely common, but hard to prove. The justifications for these charges are numerous. They include, but are not limited to the following:

Business is Slow - see the article: Auto Repair Costs - The Worst Time of Year For Car Repair (@ EzineArticles.com or RepairTrust.com) for an in-depth discussion of how car repair prices are manipulated

Overhead Expenses - the cost of doing business is repeatedly passed on to the car repair customer, very often unjustifiably

Competition - to keep a competitive edge against competition, shops will mark up prices stating that the client would have paid even more somewhere else. They will also use their own inferior parts from their own suppliers, despite the availability of better quality parts for less money.

Profit Margins - in the name of customer convenience, prices are frequently jacked up to maintain profit margins. For example, a repair shop will tack on an additional 20% to MSRP for a part that you could get for 20% less at a dealer.

Ego - you will pay extra for ego-inflated diagnosis and repair because most technicians are ill-qualified and thus self-conscious, which in turn fills them with feelings of grandiosity when they actually fix something right - how convenient for you!

What should you do...

In an industry that lacks standardization (that's adhered to anyway) and an effective regulatory system, the auto repair customer stands alone.

Here are a few quick tips if you suspect convenience charges.

1) Get it in writing - get your estimates and repair orders in a detailed printout to enable you to scrutinize the charges

2) Ask questions - if you don't understand a charge - ask. Don't just pay and "assume" that you were treated fairly

3) Call another service center and request an estimate

4) Compare part prices with MSRP

5) Don't be afraid to negotiate - ask for a discount if you're having lots of repairs done. Check for specials, senior citizens discounts, coupons...etc

6) Be nice, sincere, and shrewd. Repair industry folks respond much more positively to someone who is sincere, and genuine. But be cautious and question everything.

It's clear that auto repair is a necessity. The nature of the automobile and the conditions under which it must perform demands it. Car repair and maintenance is vital for the community and the economic structure of the world in which we live. Yet, the industry is run and controlled by a pack of wolves. Since we're not talking about running into a convenience store for an over-priced gallon of milk, perhaps a little more help (by way of transparent pricing standards) from Uncle Sam is in order.

What Is Vehicle Wrapping?

Vehicle wrapping is a technique that has previously been used mostly on commercial vehicles for advertising and branding purposes, but is now increasingly being adopted by private vehicle owners. The process itself involves covering the whole exterior of a vehicle in a thin, malleable, adhesive vinyl. Once the vinyl has been positioned and applied, it is trimmed and cut away from around the windows, door jambs, panel gaps and trim details. It is then thoroughly stuck down onto the paintwork by working out any trapped air from underneath the vinyl with a soft squeegee, and using a heat gun to help it adhere and to work it around the contours of the vehicle.

The main reason people are now using the vinyl wrapping technique on their own cars is to provide a complete color change. While in the past if you wanted to change the color of your vehicle you would have to get it completely repainted, vehicle wrapping offers an attractive alternative solution.

There are a number of advantages to having your vehicle wrapped instead of painted, the main one being the cost. Although a full vehicle wrap will still be a considerable investment, it is a far cheaper alternative to a full repaint. Also, unfortunately, a high percentage of auto body repair shops do not carry out paint repairs properly, and after having a vehicle repainted it's very common to be left with imperfections in the finish, such as runs in the paint, an orange peel effect it the clear coat, bad color matching and then vast amounts of dust and over spray. In short, completely repainting a vehicle is a very messy, time consuming and labor intensive process and it can be very hard to find someone that can do it properly and if you do, you're probably going to have to pay a premium - pushing the cost up even more.

In contrast, vehicle wraps are the complete opposite. They can be applied in as little as a day, create no mess for the vehicle owner, and if applied correctly by an experienced fitter, is little that can go wrong. The vehicle is simply washed and decontaminated, certain trim and exterior components are removed and then the vinyl is applied. More than one person is usually required at the beginning of the process, in order to correctly position and apply the large sheets of vinyl, but once positioned and roughly applied the rest can be done by a single individual.

The quality of the vinyl now available also means that it's actually very had to tell the difference between a painted finish and a vinyl wrap, and most can even be polished and waxed just like a regular painted finish. As well as different colors you can also choose to completely change the finish, as most manufacturers now offer matte, satin, printed and even chromium vinyl types. Due to this wide variety of options, the possibilities are almost limitless. For example, you can have different panels in different colors, have decals, images and text easily worked into the design, and even contrast different finishes by having dark, matte finish racing stripes laid over a high gloss, bright base color for instance.

Wrapping your vehicle actually benefits the original paintwork in a number of ways. Firstly, it helps to thoroughly protect and preserve it from the weather, keeping environmental contaminants away. Then, it provides a protective barrier against rock and stone chips, which can easily damage paintwork and lead to rust formation. It also acts as a barrier against the suns strong UV rays, which can oxidize and fade your paintwork. And lastly, instead of your paintwork being inflicted with scuffs, swirls marks and light scratches over time, the vinyl will instead take the brunt of these, being completely eliminated when the wrap is removed.

If you are considering having your vehicle wrapped, there are a few things to consider. You should ensure that you find a qualified professional to prepare your vehicle and install the wrap, because although it is a far more straight forward process that repainting a vehicle, there is still the potential for damage to be inflicted at certain parts of the process. You also need to make sure whoever is fitting the wrap pays sufficient attention to the edges, as the last thing you want is for it to start peeling and lifting off soon after it has been applied. The last thing to note is that once it has been applied, there may be a short curing period before you can wash and clean the exterior of your car, this is simply to ensure all areas of the wrap thoroughly adhere to the surface and any time you would have to wait would be far shorter than the time you may have to wait after having your vehicle repainted.

In conclusion, vehicle wraps are a relatively quick, easy and cost effective way to completely change the color and/or finish or your vehicle, whilst at the same time protecting and extending the life of the paintwork underneath.

How Does The 2008 Chrysler Crossfire Do So Much For So Little?

The answer is to be found in its heritage as a product of the short-lived Daimler Chrysler venture - or, in more familiar language, the Crossfire is a Mercedes with a Chrysler nameplate. In fact, the very name of this car, which was first revealed in 2001 as a concept car, represents the crossing of forces between Chrysler and Daimler-Benz. While the cooperation between the two automotive giants did not last, it did leave behind an interesting souvenir that remains in great demand, namely, the 2008 Crossfire.

This sporty little two-seater was manufactured by Karmann in Germany and exported to the US under the Chrysler name. Today, it retains a respectable part of its original value and a loyal and growing fan club as a used vehicle. It was made in both hard-top and convertible versions, and both versions of the automobile remain available on the resale market in respectable, albeit limited, quantities.

Its standard engine is a high-performance 18-valve 3.2-liter V6 that delivers 215 horsepower, and this engine is the only power plant available for the 2008 model of the Crossfire. However, there really is no need for a more powerful engine, or a more efficient one, as this engine delivers 229 ft-lbs of torque and fuel mileage of 15 mpg/city and 23 mpg/highway. Its standard transmission is a six-speed manual, but a five-speed automatic transmission was available as an option and pre-owned vehicles with this option remain readily available.

Inside, the Crossfire for 2008 does not sacrifice comfort for a sporty image. Instead, it boasts an eight-way power seat with multi-level heating and height adjustment for the driver, a four-way power passenger seat, carpet and trim and other amenities associated with luxury vehicles. This is yet another expression of the Mercedes-Benz heritage of the Crossfire, as the German automaker is renowned for providing an atmosphere of luxury and comfort even in its high-performance sports cars.

Safety represents yet another aspect of the German contribution to the design and construction of this Daimler-Chrysler showpiece. The 2008 Crossfire includes door mounted side airbags and dual knee airbags, and both the driver and passenger front airbags feature multi-stage deployment. The Crossfire is even equipped with a trunk anti-trap device and automatic locking retractors, and it is designed with crumple zones to protect its two occupants in the event of a crash.

Its exterior design is that of a classic sports car, updated for the 21st century. It is commanding without being pretentious, and just futuristic enough to garner admiration without appearing out of place on the road or in the parking lot. Considering that this car was hardly conceived for runs to the supermarket or home improvement center, it does have ample space for storage under its hatchback rear door.

The 2008 Crossfire is a powerful and well-designed Mercedes sports car in Chrysler disguise. It leaves one wondering what might have been had the Daimler-Chrysler partnership succeeded.

Learn Car Spray Painting Techniques Like the Workshops - Proper Paint Guide

In this short space, it is impossible to go into detail at any length, so the following is a brief guideline to ensure quality workmanship and minimal negative comebacks. Of course, guidelines must be established, but they also must be strictly followed.

Setting the Guidelines and Expectations:
Good training is reflected in quality work, as bad training is reflected in bad work, and prohibitive costs result due to comebacks. It is important to make sure that the training is top notch.

Many paint manufacturers have excellent training standards and it is a good policy to follow and enforce those standards. The following is a good example of good prep guidelines as given by a good paint company.

Contaminates that float around can ruin a paint job, and that applies to the surface, and the shop as well. To do this make sure, there is adequate filtration, and that it is frequently cleaned to the point of being almost sterile. Minute dust particles and hair are the worst offenders, making technicians walking dust magnets if the filtration system is inadequate.

Every day, and before each job, the shop must be thoroughly cleaned, top to bottom, as much as possible. Keep the spray booth clean always, and thoroughly wash it weekly.
Check filter regularly and replace when necessary, as it affects health.

Before starting a job, make sure there is nothing like lamps mirrors, etc. around because they can cause cracking in the topcoat and the clear coat.

Before doing any surface prep, thoroughly wash the surface, all you need is plain old soap and water, because it removes all water- soluble material that can cause damage later. The vehicle must be scuffed with detergent and hot water to remove wax and sealants.

Prepping the Paint Surface:
You might want to try some fine waterproof sandpaper to scrub the surface. Some people like to use the scuff pads, those gray nylon types. Removing the painted area that has become damaged requires some grinding. Ideally, you will need sandpaper that is 80 grit and an orbital sander.

You will need to concentrate your grinding along the paint area that is damaged. In order to be successful you will have to see at least a quarter of an inch of color coat as well as clear coat and of course the undercoat as well. So the next step will be to featheredge the etching filler. This can be done right over the body filler or even on the bare metal. The purpose here is to provide protection both in adhesion and corrosion.

Once you have reached this stage then the next will be for the surface primer. It's easy to see though that by setting and following guidelines and expectations that everyone knows what their job is and what they are responsible for. If there is a problem and a repair comeback shows up it becomes easier to determine where the breakdown occurred. This way you can go back to the drawing board so to speak and correct the problems where they are happening.

Getting an Estimate For Your Auto Body Repairs

If you car has recently been involved in a minor or major accident and needs auto body repair you will need to find a great auto body shop. Finding that auto body shop that will meet your expectations will require some effort on your part. If you vehicle does need repair, one of the biggest concerns car owners face is how much money will be coming out of their wallet. So, what you need to be doing is not only checking on the qualifications of the shop but also checking their prices by getting quotes to repair what you want and need repaired.

Getting quotes can be challenging and time consuming. You will find yourself repeating your vehicles problems and the concerns you have about your vehicle. You may even want to do some additional enhancements to really get your vehicle to shine. It is important that you first make a list of what you think you need done or problem areas on your vehicle and also write down the additional things you are thinking of investing in. That way you will not leave anything out and you will get a more accurate quote. You may also get a notepad and write down information from each shop that you speak to, if they do not print the information for you. That way you will not forget which shop you already spoke to and what each shop has to offer and their prices.

One way that you can get quotes is by calling auto body shops in your area. This can help you to get around a bout idea of how much your repairs will cost. You can also speak to them about additional services they offer. It would be great if you could get all the work you want done in one place.

Another way you can get a quote is to actually stop by auto body shops in your area. Actually going to the auto body shop is great because they physically see what work needs to be done and to what extent, which will lead to a more accurate estimate for you. Also you will be able to really get a feel for the auto body shop to see if it is a place you would like to conduct business with and if you think they will complete the best work for your vehicle.

If you can't physically go to the shop you can always check out their website. Their website should list the services they offer and a little bit about each one. That way you are a little more familiar with what each repair service entails. Some of them even have the option to get a quote online from them. This can be better than a phone call because you can even upload photos on to some of the sites which can get you a more accurate estimate than the phone call.

So, make sure you really check around and get the most qualified specialist and a great price as well. Oh yea, you shouldn't be paying for all those quotes either!!!

Where Should I Buy Replacement Side Mirrors?

So you're driving around one day and you happen to stop off at the gas station. It's a nice, lovely day and so you cut off your car at the gas station-and then you realize that the person driving by your car is a bit too close... then WHAM! Your side mirror is gone. Naturally, you're angry. After all, it's not everyday that someone knocks off your side mirror-but today, you got unlucky. So what can you do? You can file a hit and run, but what will your insurance do about a broken mirror? In any case, what should you do about the broken mirror? It's not a huge, major thing, but it's still pretty important.

What to Do First

First of all, you have quite a few options as to what you can do first off. On one hand, you can simply go up to the nearest auto parts store and see what they have. This isn't a half bad idea-except that there are a few extra problems. You then have to decide what type of replacement side mirrors you want, how much you can spend... and if you're unlucky and have a specialty mirror for whatever reason, well...you may have to wait a while. Not to mention that if you have to go to a dealership that you'll have to pay for labor, which

What Should You Know About Looking Online?

When you look online, you not only are able to see what is available, but you are able to find quite a few different varieties of replacement side mirrors. Maybe you want a mirror with a blindspot mirror. It might help if you lost your mirror in a similar scenario to the one above, but it was your fault. Then you have regular old mirrors. Even better, you can direct order that specialty mirror that you need. Not to mention that it's way easier to compare prices looking online compared to looking at a shop and you can find what you need before you even look at the site. All that you need is your serial number for your parts-which you can also find online. Many auto accessories stores are also willing to give you the serial number no questions asked.

In Short

It's not hard to buy replacement side mirrors-you just need to make sure that you are ready to do a little bit of searching. On the plus side-you won't even have to leave your house!

Epoxy Filler - History, Tips and Advantages

Epoxy Filler
Epoxy filler is a general term used to describe filler used to fill in cracks, dents and surface imperfections on metal and non- metal surface. This product should be strong, durable, weather and heat resistant. It should apply easily and come in a single component instead of mixing a resin and hardener or catalyst. There are many uses for this type of filler and in many industries as well.

Industries
The foundry industry was first to identify a metal filler for castings and imperfections in castings.

They needed metal filler that was one part or single component, easy to apply, dries fast and looks like the metallic look of the casting. Metal fabricators, welders, auto body shops, ornamental metal workers, hobbyists and do it yourselfers were soon introduced to this unique and ready-to-use metal repair and patching compound.

Liquid Painting/Coating
In the past, these metal parts were liquid coated with a latex, alkyd, solvent based or industrial liquid paint and coating to protect metal surfaces against rust, corrosion, chemical attack, weathering or immersion. Liquid coating was the only way to paint and protect these surfaces and the paint was usually solvent based applied through an airless or hvlp paint system. When there was a need to apply a filler to repair these dents, voids, rough welds and surface imperfections, two part epoxies made with a resin and a hardener with pigments, metal or plastic fillers could be used to mask and hide these voids and simply liquid painted over.

New Type of Coating
While liquid painting was common, regulations forced paint manufacturers to re formulate paint and coatings to contain less solvent which would also lead to the development or powder coating. This is a type of coating which is applied as a dry powder. The powder does not need solvent to keep the filler and binder parts in a liquid form. This type of paint is applied with an electrostatic gun and is then baked/cured under heat usually in an industrial oven which helps it flow and form a skin. This new development is mainly used for coating of metals, appliances, extrusions made from aluminum, auto and bike parts.

Features for Epoxy Fillers
Demand for coating using this powder started to increase because of the reduced solvent emitting into the atmosphere. This type of coating emits zero volatile organic compounds unlike solvent based paints. Coating applicators started to grow as liquid coating applicators were forced to either switch from liquid coating to coating with powder or install a production line to be able to apply both liquid and powder based coating on the needs of their customers. As mentioned before, this application requires heat or an industrial oven to cure. If there is now a surface imperfection, dent, void, crack, rough weld that needs to be patched, smoothed over filled in, two part epoxies could not be used because epoxies will start to shrink, pop out, outgas, bubble, blister when exposed to the required baking temperatures needed to flow and cure. Epoxy fillers, metal patching compounds have to be single component, epoxy free, heat resistant, easy to apply and will accept the powder process.

Applications and Uses
There are many uses and applications for a one part epoxy filler which also provides advantages to the metalworking industry worldwide. Reducing rejects in foundry production, repair gouges, worn metal surfaces, patch rough spots and dents. This one part filler can also be thinned out to be brushed and sprayed onto the surface. Sealing, protecting, filling metal and non-metal items has been done for many years and will continue to be done as long as quality during the manufacturing process is strict and thorough.

Auto Glass Repair - Not the Nightmare Many Believe It to Be

Let's face it, just like 99% of drivers, you more than likely get in your vehicle every day without ever giving your windshield a second thought. After all, it's hardy a piece of art, at least not until it crack or shatters. With cars designed the way they are nowadays, it really does take a significant collision to shatter a car's windshield, but cracks are a different kettle of fish altogether.

All it takes is one small pebble to strike your windshield while you're driving, and you could be faced with a crack. For the vast many drivers, the temptation to ignore a small crack is just too great, and yet that is the last thing you should do. Obviously if your insurance policy doesn't cover auto glass repair, you'll inevitably be concerned about the costs involved. Ironically however, many people who choose to ignore a crack in their windshields are people who actually have fully comprehensive insurance. Even more ironic is the fact that most fully comprehensive insurance policies don't feature any deductible when it comes to repairs concerning auto glass. In other words, you, the vehicle owner, won't be expected to pay anything out of your own pocket should your windshield need replacing.

Naturally, if you drive a relatively old vehicle, the value of your vehicle may not justify the cost of fully comprehensive cover, in which case you'll have to foot the bill for auto glass repair yourself. If that is indeed the case, you'll obviously want to get the best possible deal, but you need to bear in mind that there's a very fine line between affordable auto glass repairs, and cheap auto glass repairs, and the cheap need to be avoided at all costs. Remember, your windshield is more than just a pretty feature designed to keep you dry and out of the wind. It's in fact an integral part of your vehicles structural integrity, and therefore it could one day mean difference between life and death.

Ideally, if your windshield is cracked, no matter how small the crack, it should be replaced. Unfortunately however, replacing a windshield is by no means cheap, and many drivers simply don't have that amount of spare cash lying about. If money is tight, and the crack in your windshield is only an inch or two in length, auto glass repair centers will be able to repair the crack successfully. However, auto glass with a crack that is longer than about three inches really does need to be replaced. So many people choose to ignore a small one inch or two inches crack, and then by the time a few months have passed, that small crack will have spread to such an extent that the glass needs to be replaced, when in fact it could simply have been repaired, had the owner acted on it sooner.

Like many things in life, auto glass repair or replacement can be a nightmare, or it can be a total breeze. At the end of the day, it's going to depend on which company you choose to use. If you want to avoid trouble and disappointment, simply stick to using the services of a reputable company, even if they do charge a little more than the next man.

Car Accidents: Defective Auto Parts or Driver Negligence?

If you have ever been in a traffic accident or have seen one, you would know how disastrous it can be. Auto parts everywhere, glass shards shining on the concrete and occasional death. There are a number of factors which contribute to the risk of an accident, i.e. vehicle design, speed, road design and environment bust mostly it is driver skill and behaviour.

Statistics show that most of the accidents occur due to the driver's negligence than faulty auto parts. The leading 4 causes for accidents due to driver's negligence are:

1. Driving while distracted.

Diverting attention towards other things such as cell phones, food, texting while driving is the leading cause of motor accidents in the U.S.

2. Speeding

Speed kills. The faster you go, the slower is the reaction time to prevent an accident.

3. Tailgating.

Driving impatiently and recklessly and too close to another vehicle is a tested method to get into accidents. In case of driving behind heavy vehicles, if you are within 200 meters, there is a chance that your windshield will suffer damage from rocks and pebbles jettisoned by HMV's tires. Minor cracks can be fixed via auto glass repairs but at times you will have to replace the whole auto windshield. The auto glass insurance claim can help you with it.

4. Drunk driving.

Alcohol impairs the ability to focus and function properly and is very dangerous while driving. It is one of the leading causes for motor accidents.

At times, accidents occur due to faulty auto parts or auto design. The parts mostly lead to accidents are brakes, tires, steering and suspension. Sometimes SUVs, minivans and trucks go into barrel roll if you turn tight corners at high speed, this is because of their design which leads to a high centre of gravity when compared to sedans.

Some tips to avoid accidents:

1. Go slow.

Stay within the speed limits. Remember that speed kills and there is no such thing as safe speeding.

2. Keep away from distractions.

Avoid using cell phones and other distractions while driving. Its not only dangerous for you but also for people around you.

3. Don't get in with a drunk driver.

Avoid drunk driving at all costs. If you are drunk let someone else drive and vice versa.

4. Avoid tailgating.

Keep at least a 4 seconds distance between you and the car ahead so that you can get ample time to stop if they slam their brakes.

5. Wear seatbelts.

They are not just an accessory in your car. Seatbelts prevent driver ejection in case of an accident and holds you firm in your seat.

Car Repair - Finding The Right Shop

There is perhaps no other business that lends itself to word of mouth reputation as much as the car repair business. If you need some help finding a good shop for your car, here are some tips.

It might be a pain from time to time, but few people could get along without their personal vehicle. That's why it can be such a hassle (not to mention financially troublesome) when the vehicle breaks down. One major part of the hassle is finding a mechanic you can trust. While most people in the car repair business are reputable and honest, you don't have to look around too hard to find those that aren't. From the outside, they are often indistinguishable from the good guys. You may never even know you got ripped off. If you need some help finding a good shop for your car, here are some tips.

A good place to start is with the people you know. Because there are always shops that charge higher prices and shops that do better work, people like to tell everyone they know when they find that little gem of a shop that is honest, fair, and has reasonable pricing. Ask your friends and family where they take their vehicle when they need work done. You may even be able to find an amateur mechanic who will work on your vehicle for a fraction of the cost. Just make sure you don't wind up in a situation where your vehicle is out of commission for a month while an amateur tries to find the time to work on it.

If you hear of a shop that sounds good, take a trip over there and keep your eyes open while you tell them your problem. Inspect everything about the shop, including how clean it is, how well organized, and how professional it looks. They say you can't judge a book by its cover, but honest and good mechanic shops often have a lot of business and can afford to keep the place looking nice. Appearance is a reflection on the business owner and can tell you quite a bit about a place before you shell out your money. While you're doing your inspection, pay close attention to how the personnel treat you. Some car repair shops treat their customers as if they are a hassle to bother with. If you get even the slightest feeling of being mistreated, take your car elsewhere immediately.

Most importantly, when you do find a good car repair shop, make sure you tell everyone you know about it. That will drive more business that way and ensure that it stays open for years to come. National chains with big advertising budgets can afford to push their way to being the top dog in an area by sheer brute force. By singing the praises of a good, smaller shop, you can not only contribute to the local economy, you can see to it that good work continues to make a difference.

Auto Body Repair: Get Quality Each And Every Time!

If you have ever had to have your car looked at or repaired, you will be aware that there are so many companies that offer auto body repair services, so how do you narrow down your choice? Here are a few pointers to help you!

Has the company been in business for a long time?

Family owned businesses are generally passed down and have a good reputation as well as quality service. They are highly skilled and take their job personally. Generally, they enjoy return trade or trade comes their way with little advertising or marketing, but by word of mouth from highly satisfied customers. That is one advertising service you can't beat. However, the company should still have an internet presence.

Is the work guaranteed?

One of the main things you should consider from a quality auto body repair shop is the guarantee. This is essential as without a guarantee any defective workmanship will not be rectified and you may find yourself having to pay another firm to put it right.

Does the company have good customer service?

The hallmark of a good quality company is the way it handles its customers as well as its potential customers. A company that is polite and quick to respond to all queries with equal attention to detail is sure to give a good quality service.

Does the company have a provable track record?

Many companies set up and put a few testimonials on their site and these can be bogus. There is no way to tell if they are genuine or not, so although testimonials are great, do not place so much emphasis on them.

Does the company have contact details on the website?

This is important so you can contact them either by phone or by email. Stay way from companies that only have an email web form to complete with no other means of contact available.

Does the company offer high quality repairs to a range of different makes and models of car?

This may be something that you hadn't thought of, but may be essential in determining whether the company you choose can handle your repairs.

How quickly can the repairs be undertaken?

Obviously you want a quality job, but if you have to leave your car in the auto repair shop for weeks, this may be a problem with alternative travel costs. You will need to hire a car to use whilst yours is being repaired, and time is money. Therefore, when obtaining an assessment for repairs, ensure the time period is also factored into the costing.

Will the company alert you if they find something else that needs attention?

Quite often, other problems can be found once work has started on the bodywork of an auto and a good technician will alert you if he discovers anything else that should be taken care of. The decision should be yours whether it is to be dealt with or not. The technician should not take care of the work and just add it to your bill at the end.

Learn the Best Way to Choose the Best Auto Body Shop

If you have a car or are planning to have one, one of the most important business contacts you should have with you is that of an auto body shop. However, as there are such shops in and around every town, it becomes very difficult to choose the best among them. Following are certain guidelines that will help you choose a good, reliable one in your locality:

1) The best way to ensure the credibility of a repair shop in your area is to consider valuable recommendations from colleagues, friends, and relatives, who have dealt with it before. This will help you have an approximate idea about the overall cost of services charged by the shop, the behavior of the staff involved in the repair process, and the trustworthiness of the company you are dealing with.

2) Another factor you should take into consideration when making a choice is whether or not the shop offers suitable warranty on its services and auto body parts used during repair. These warranties usually reflect a sense of confidence and honesty in the staff of that particular shop.

3) Also, before picking out a particular auto body shop, determine the types of payments that it accepts for car repair. A shop that accepts different types of payment, such a variety of credit cards, cash, as well as checks, is the best bet.

4) In case, you have a very strict monthly budget yet need to get your car repaired as soon as possible, it is better to choose a shop that offers a variety of installment plans to its customers.

Even if your vehicle is functioning properly, it is advisable to find the shop in your area much in advance in order to avoid any last minute searches and hassles. Choosing the right auto body shop is a very significant decision. By following the above mentioned guidelines, choosing the best one in your area will become very easy.

Get a Check Up on Your Car Before a Big Trip

With the Holidays in full swing, many a family is planning a trip to see relatives and friends. Often the car is the transportation of choice. The question is, is your car in shape for the long trip? Getting your car checked out before a long trip is a really smart thing to do. You can avoid any potential safety issues and ensure your family is safe and secure in the car, and you can certainly avoid costly and untimely roadside breakdowns. Take your car to the local auto repair shop, and they will give your car a good going over.

Things to Look For

There are a lot of things the auto technician will look for when inspecting your car for a long trip. Some of them are:

  • Proper Air Pressure in your Tires- Tire pressure makes for better handling and better fuel economy. If you haven't rotated your tires in 10,000 miles, do so.

  • Tread on the Tires is OK- You need good traction if you encounter winter weather or rain. This check also assures you won't have a flat!

  • Windshield Wiper Fluid is to the Top of the Reservoir- Winter is here. Being able to keep your windshield clean and clear of ice or snow is a must. Sometimes you need a lot of fluid to keep your windshield clean in winter weather storms. Fill to the top!

  • Oil Level is Good and Quality of Oil is Good- This is very important. A car runs a lot more smoothly and efficiently (less cost) with clean oil.

  • Transmission Fluid Level and Quality is Good- This is very important. If your Transmission fluid is old or low, it can harm the transmission so be sure it is at the full level and clean.

  • Brake Fluid Level is OK- Low brake fluid can cause brakes to malfunction.

  • Radiator is Clear of Debris- A radiator needs to breath to keep your engine cool.

  • No Loose Fittings or Items in the Engine Area and Under the Car- Don't leave any key fittings on the road! Check for any leaks.

  • Brakes are Working OK- This is a big safety check. Make sure the brake pads are healthy and have plenty of life left in them.

Be sure you get a Free 174 Point Car Inspection while you have the car at the auto repair shop and get set up on a preventative maintenance plan for the long term health of your car. It pays for itself! Have a safe trip!

Save On Car Repairs: Cut Down On Car Engine Oil And Fuel Costs

There are many ways to cut down on car engine oil and fuel. Having the right mindset and a clear checklist of things you can do to save more money, rather than spending it all on car repairs and the next oil or fuel change, will help you slowly cut back on expenses.

Here are the things you can do to cut down on your car engine oil and fuel costs:

a. Check your vehicle regularly for defects. If you no longer have warranty on your car, you can grab a DIY repair kit, and just give your car some tender loving care. Also don't be wary of visiting a car servicing station at least once every 20,000 miles, or depending on your budget, once every quarter.

b. Use the best car engine oil you can find. It doesn't necessarily mean it's the most expensive one either. Search the internet, or the resources below, on some of the best car engine oil products you can get your hands on, and just use it on your vehicle. The best vehicles always run the longest and perform the best when it's running on high-quality car engine oil.

c. Avoid unnecessary travels. If you're a travel bug, try not to push your car to the limit. Long trips are unhealthy, not only to your car, but also on the pocket. However, if you really need to go on a long travel for personal or business reasons, make sure you visit a car servicing station before you go on the road. Have them check your air filters and see if there are any dirt or clogs. Let them also check your tire pressure, and make sure there are no bumps or holes on your car. Safety should always be the first priority of responsible car owners, especially before going on the road for long travels.

How to Choose an Auto Repair Facility

Like any professional, it's best to find one before you need one. When it comes to auto repair, the same advice applies. The time to start looking for an auto repair facility is not when you're broken down on the side of the highway, waiting for a tow truck. The best way to find an auto repair center is through someone you trust who has used this shop's services and is satisfied with the results. Even with a recommendation, there are certain things that you want to keep in mind when choosing an auto repair center.

A good place to start in finding which shops are located nearby is online. Google and other search engines will display results based on your area. Many times, results that show up will also have reviews associated with them. Reading these reviews can give you an idea of what kind of experience previous customers have had with the shop. It is also good to look at the facility's website to see if it looks professional and well put together.

What professional affiliations does the shop have?

The first thing you might do when deciding on a new shop to bring your vehicle to is find out from the BBB if the shop you considering has had any complaints. If the shop hasn't had any complaints it doesn't necessarily mean that they're worthy of your business, it's just a good place to start. A shop that is approved through Automobile Association means that it has investigated the shop and has contacted a number of previous customers to determine if the shop has met their standards. They asks these customers questions like:

1. Was vehicle repaired on time?

2. Was the vehicle repaired correctly the first time?

3. Was the customer greeting in a prompt and courteous manner?

4. Did they offer a ride to the customer if they needed one?

5. Was the customer waiting area clean and comfortable?

6. Was the original estimate accurate?

Another thing to look find out if the mechanics at the shop are ASE certified. ASE provides certifications for different areas in automotive technology. A shop where a majority of mechanics there has multiple ASE certifications is usually a good sign that they will be competent with repairing your vehicle.

Does the shop have modern equipment?

A good indicator of whether or not a shop will be able to service your vehicle properly is the type of equipment they have. Equipment such as state of the art scanners and diagnostic equipment are essential in obtaining an accurate diagnosis of your vehicle.

Is the auto shop a complete auto repair shop?

It is best to find a shop that can take care of all of your vehicle's repair needs such as:

Engine and drive train
Brakes and suspension
Radiator and cooling system repair
Air conditioning
Mufflers and exhaust
Foreign vehicle repair

Another important factor is the warranty the shop offers. A really good warranty is one that covers 18 months or 18000 miles, parts and labor. That means that the auto repair center stands behind its work.

Smart Motorists Use Independent Repair Shops

Since the onset of the economic downturn there has been a rapid expansion in independent auto shops. In the past consumers would take their automobiles to the dealer for necessary repairs and maintenance. Often the dealerships have unusually high prices for basic mechanical work. The cost of parts is often the highest possible charge and the mechanics are trained only on the models of vehicles sold.

Smaller auto shops frequently provide much more affordable service. Additionally, their technicians are trained to work on a multitude of different vehicles. This can be especially important when unusual problems occur. However, money is tighter than ever today so it is crucial that automobiles last as long as possible.

The resurgence in value shopping has allowed smaller companies to thrive. While authorized dealers often charge the absolute highest possible prices, those needing value tend to favor independent dealers. Quality is another advantage as smaller shops will often offer upgraded parts at prices that are not exorbitant. Even oil change companies that are locally owned will be significantly less expensive than the major chains.

This is especially true when it comes to high end products such as synthetic oil and quality oil filters. One of the unexpected areas of value is free information clinics that offer the average person the ability to gain a better understanding of the inner workings of their automobile. An educated consumer can avoid the pitfalls of a shop that is trying to keep its customers in the dark. These independents are working hard to attract a wide range of business including fleet discounts and high end servicing.

As repair is the only business for these small shops, it is essential that they be done correctly. A bad reputation can be devastating to independent shops and would result in decreased business and this is why customer service is so important to these companies. Auto dealers make most of their money from new sales and the service is pure profit. By focusing on just repair you can be guaranteed to receive the best possible service.

Rather than squeezing every penny out of the customer small shops prefer larger volumes. This is another reason they are such good deals. When you entrust your car to a mechanic the safety of your family is at stake so repair shops guarantee their work and are insured if something ever goes bad. Over the last couple of years small independent repair shops have managed to substantially outpace the dealers for quality and price.

Value pricing combined with the experience of large volume work results in the best possible value for a car owner. Many dealers are suffering in the downturn. Their refusal to lower prices could be part of the reason and it's now coming back to haunt them. For anyone who is experiencing the belt tightening of the downturn, independent shops are the way to go.

Uses and Types of Aftermarket Car Parts

Like it or not, but a car is the most visible statement of luxury and the most potent status symbol. However, is a car and people will not notice it until you customize it according to your taste. That flashy body paint, those shining chrome mirrors and radiator grilles, ultra-luxurious interiors, leather seats, and other additions make your car the object of attention.

Perhaps no other human invention is subject to so many alterations and customization as vehicles. Every car was a customized once. Those were the days of elegant, classic cars. During the first decade of the twentieth century, those who could afford cars had a choice of some of the finest car ever built. These hand-built cars were powerful and luxurious, using the finest woods, leathers and cloths, and many embellishments.

The era of custom-built cars ended with the introduction of mass production starting with Ford Model T. Instead of luxury, usefulness dictates the automobile industry of today. These days, except for a few very high-end cars, manufacturers do not entertain requests for customization. However, not everything is lost. One can still revamp his or her car with hundreds of aftermarket car parts. Let us understand what aftermarket parts are.

To begin with, it should be clear that aftermarket car parts are not essential for the car's everyday running. Nor are aftermarket parts available as standard accessories from car dealers. These are available at manufacturers or suppliers of ancillary spare parts.

Decking up your car to suit your tastes is entirely an individual choice. This is accomplished is by addition of aftermarket car parts to the vehicles or by replacing the already existing parts with aftermarket car parts. Aftermarket parts serve three purposes: some parts are only for boosting performance, some for changing the look and feel of the vehicle, and some for increasing the vehicle's efficiency.

• Enhancing look and feel: some examples include alteration in chassis and body shape, showy paint, differently styled steering wheels and gear knobs, chromium plated mirrors, bumpers and wheel plates, leather / fur upholstery, etc.

• Boosting performance: the turbocharger is the most frequent device used for getting extra power out of the engine; another popular aftermarket part is the high performance muffler added to the exhaust system to reduce the engine noise. Control arms and control panels are also popular additions.

• Improving efficiency: gauges to monitor different aspects of your vehicle's performance, attaching fuel saving devices to fuel distribution system, modifying car body to make it light and to obtain a better drag are some to the measures for getting the most of your car.

How Much Does Your Car Really Cost You?

For some people, cars are a necessity. They need a car to get to and from work, and other places. But for many others, cars are certainly not a requirement. People who live in big cities, for example, often don't need a car, but own a car, even if they're only using it every once in a while.

With the economic problems facing us today and everyone trying to cut back on spending, one has to ask, "Do I really need a car?" Granted owning a car or two is part and parcel of the American Dream, but so is paying your mortgage, having a decent paying job and putting food on your families table. With these uncertain economic times, if one aspect of your American Dream is preventing you from achieving another more important goal, then maybe it is time to reprioritize. Yes, we understand that you waited your whole life to have that shiny, brand new car of your dreams, but remove your emotions of out of the equation and let's look at the facts

One way to decide this question is to look at the factors that add up to how much your car really costs you per year. Whether you drive a total beater, or a nice, expensive, luxurious gas-guzzler; selling your car will certainly save you money. That's because in nearly all instances, mass transit and other forms of commuting are cheaper than owning, maintaining, and fueling a car. We need to look at all the costs involved in car ownership.

  • Car Insurance

  • Cost of Gas and Fuel

  • Maintenance and Repair

  • Vehicle related licensing, registration and other fees

  • Car purchase, loan payments and finance charges

  • Parking, tolls, etc.

Insurance: Automobile insurance costs are huge and keep on going up. Drivers pay more for auto insurance in states with significant urban populations, greater traffic density and a higher cost-of-living, though they are the people that are least required to own a car. Tort liability and other auto laws as well as each state's auto body repair labor costs, liability coverage requirements and theft rates also have an impact on auto insurance prices. While the average annual cost for auto insurance premiums nationwide for 2007 was estimated at $847 per policy, the top five most expensive cities (Detroit, Philadelphia, Newark, Los Angeles, and New York City) have rates from $5,162 to $3,127 per year. Even the most insurance friendly city, Roanoke Virginia, come in at $758.00 per year. That's a nice chunk of change.

Gasoline: Granted gas has decreased to date to a national average under $2.50 a gallon, but the average American still uses 500 to 600 gallons of gasoline every year.  As the average fuel economy of new cars and light trucks declined from a high of about 26 miles per gallon in 1988 to less than 24.5 mpg in 1999 due to larger vehicles, more horsepower, and increased sales of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and trucks, our consumption of gas has gone up with the price. Now almost 50% of the passenger vehicles on the road are SUVs and light trucks that do not have to meet the higher fuel economy standards of cars.

Depending on where in the country you live, and depending on the gas prices, as the average vehicle is driven more than 12,000 miles per year today that adds at least another $1,250.00 to the cost of owning a car. If we happen to see another rise in prices as we did in the early summer of 2008, then you can just about double that number.  At 4.10 a gallon, which was the height of the summer 2008 gas price increases, that number goes up to $2,050.00 dollars a year spent on gas alone. We all know it hurts when $50.00 does not even fill up your gas tank.

Repair and Maintenance: Then there is the regular scheduled maintenance for a car. This number is a bit harder to pin down since so many factors must go into keeping a car in safe running condition.   Baring the kinds of repairs that we all dread, like your car's drive shaft falling off the bottom of your car at the worst possible time; an oil change, fluid upkeep, and tires happen to all of us on a regular basis. Add in the somewhat semi-annual break change, mufflers and battery replacement and the cost of average car maintenance falls at about $340.00 to 650.00 a year.

Vehicle related licensing, registration and other fees: One needs to add in the costs of licensing and inspection a vehicle as well if we are going to be realistic here. Inspections have a range of prices on them depending on whether or not emissions'; testing is involved in your state. Registration and then the cost of keeping your driver's license too must be included. As registrations don't happen every year for everyone, the cost still comes out to between $200.00 and 690.00 per year; if you don't get any tickets.

Car purchase, loan payments and finance charges: And then, we can get to the actual cost of the car itself! Granted one can buy an old clunker out of the paper for $1,500.00, but if you are looking at the cost of a new car then based on 2006 prices, the average import price tag was $36,627 while the domestic new car price tag hovered in at $22,855. Average out the two, we have a basis of $29.741 to jump our numbers off of.   That adds up to quite a hunky monthly car loan payment and with credit rates going through the roof, quite a bit of your money paid out in finance charges as well.

For example, a new car priced out at 29,000 with a $7,000 down payment /trade in, an average tax of 7% and interest rate at the current US average of 6.58%, the monthly payment will be $549.94. That's $6,599.28 a year here, folks.

Parking: Without getting too insane about figuring in the cost of your home and renting out the driveway or garage for your car, we can just look at tolls and parking costs on a major metropolitan city basis. Average daily rates for parking increased 3.5% from 2006 to 2007 bringing the cost of daily parking in some areas as high as $32.75 per day! That means, even if you just pay for parking on weekdays when you go to work, you can be spending over $8,500.00 just to put your car someplace when you are not using it!

The grand total cost of owning a car in the US is $19,799.00 per year.

Taking the midrange amounts of the above calculations and adding them all up, it truly is almost twenty thousand dollars a year to keep a new to almost new mid range vehicle on the road in a city in the United States. If you keep that car for 5 years, then you are spending almost 100 thousand dollars for a car, something that can hit a tree and be gone in an instance. For many people that's a new house, or some really great vacations, or your child's college education!
With a number like that staring you in the face, you can really take a good hard look at your emotional ties to your automobile and decided for yourself; Do I really need to own this car?"

Revealed - Workshop Secrets to Car Bodywork Repair - Collision Repairing and Auto Restoration

When a professional collision repairer wants to bring a vehicle to its pre loss condition the best takes its cues from the aviation industry because the fasteners are very important to the life and safety of the vehicle they are working on. They have predestinated specifications for airplanes fasteners and many times these are scrutinized to make sure they are tightened correctly and if an accident ever occurs this is one main component that is looked at with great length to find out if it was a bolt or screw that loosened that could be a contributing factor!

With that being said although, vehicles may not go through the rigorous stresses an airplane may suffer it is still essential to make sure the right bolt or screw is fastened correctly. If not you, may experience squeaks, rattles, and it may ultimately impair the safety and resale value of the vehicle and cause premature failure. Many buyers are now informed on what to look for including missing bolts or different sizes not meeting specs.

When automotive engineers choose fasteners they do it for a reason and those who repair vehicles have to follow the specific requirements. This is essential, because of the different torque qualities these fasteners must be installed 100% correct. Not only can the look of your car can be affected, but the performance as well. Reports have been done that show certain fasteners on your bumpers and quarter panels if reinstalled incorrectly can cause certain expansion and allow movement, which can ultimately lead to serious damage to your vehicle after time.

When Clamping Down Fasteners:
Fasteners all include certain characteristics. They have a grade and tensile strength, which determines how much they can stretch before breakage. The diameter and type of material determine the resistance of this. The English system defines the strength of a bolt by radial lines with property numbers such as 4.6, 4.8, 5.8, 8.8 9.8 and 10.9 and the nuts must be appropriately classed to each fastener to ensure the same grade and work equally to the fastener that is installed. Nuts attached to the fastener have their own grading system with some using dots to determine their tensile strength and some using actual numbers. Always be fastidious to match the correct pair and that will ensure optimal matching connection. If you deviate from this, you can lose the connection state.

Some Important Variables:
You need to ensure the parts are secured correctly .This just means that enough force is needed to bind the components within the specifications so that parts cannot shift under regular movement.

Many times a factor of a connection can be achieved by using a pitch gauge, which can determine if a bolt or screw is tightened to its specifications. A thread pitch can sometimes be a factor and by reading the manufacturers design codes you can decrease the problems of making a bad connection which can lead to problems down the road.

Auto Repair Financing Options - No Credit Check

Whether you are a consumer looking for auto repair financing options or an automotive/transmission shop looking to help consumers who need finance help, there are four new financing options available that do not rely on having good credit.

Rather than credit, these new auto repair finance options rely on check-writing history and income. Here are some examples:

ARC90 - Finances auto and transmission repair. Approval based on income and check writing history. No credit check is required. The shop gets paid an advance on the job, and the consumer can finance the balance for 90 days up to 6 months. You will need to submit proof of income such as paystubs or bank statements and a copy of your drivers license.

Secure Payment Systems - Will finance auto and transmission repair up to $5,000. 25% down from the customer is required. Key to approval is good check writing history. The shop gets paid in full within 72 hours and the consumer can finance the balance up to 12 months.

Cross-Check - Offers an up to 90 day deferred payment plan for auto and transmission repair shops. 25% down required. Approval based on good check writing history. There are no interest or financing charges to the customer.

In-House Financing - Some car repair and transmission repair shops have chosen to in-house finance customers. There is usually a down payment required to cover most or all of the parts costs.

If you are a shop owner who does in-house car repair financing, there are new software packages available that automate the auto repair finance process from start to finish in 10 minutes. They include automated ACH-drafts from the consumer's checking account, 3-bureau credit checks, 50-state promissory notes and automated initial collection calls. These new software packages take the hassle out of in-house financing and automate the process for you. They even handle the initial collection calls, if a payment bounces, so you do not have to.

If you are a consumer in need of car repair financing, contact your local auto repair shop and ask what options they have available for you. If they do not have options available, you can either tell them about no-credit check options you found here online or try another auto repair shop.

Many auto repair shops are starting to adapt to both outside and in-house financing programs to help customers who end up having to pay for an unexpected auto repair or transmission repair.

Transmission and major engine repairs can cost anywhere between $1200-$3500 depending on the type of vehicle and the type of repair, so it is important to have financing options available so you can get your car fixed and get back on the road!

Windshield Chips - How Do I Know If It Will Spread or Crack?

The Simple Answer - "No one knows." That's probably not what you want to hear. Glass is one of those things that is hard to read. But here is some information that can help you determine what the chances could be and what to do about it.

When A Rock Chips Your Windshield... it creates a small pit, usually with small "legs" that radiate from the center of the break creating a "Star" break. Sometimes the legs can be partially encircled by a crescent shaped "bullseye" forming a "Combination" type break. Since your vehicle's windshield is made of two pieces of glass with a piece of plastic PVB sandwiched in between, the stone rarely ever shatters the glass completely. This makes a repair possible.

Tiny Legs Can Be Like Time Bombs. Some people can have chips that go for years without ever spreading and others can have a chip spread within seconds after it is formed. Therefore, it can be a gamble to not repair a chip and just see what happens. However, chances are actually quite good that it will indeed spread in time. Between road vibration, water, dirt, and temperature changes that happen in the hot summer and freezing winter, small legs in a rock chip can easily begin to spread across the windshield; forcing you to spend hundreds of dollars to replace it.

Even if your insurance will pay to replace the windshield, why repair a chip even if it costs you some money? Sounds like an odd question. But in our experience there are some real world reasons to consider. For one, getting a windshield replaced can take hours depending on the installation company used. But more importantly, incorrect installation methods can actually cause OTHER DAMAGE. Paint can be scratched. Also, water can leak past the urethane used to glue your windshield into place. All of this can actually lead to severe rust forming behind the seal of your windshield glass. (In fact, we've seen metal frames which the glass rests on severely rusted due to this type of damage; to the point it required welding, priming and painting. Expensive!) It is usually a good idea to avoid replacing windshield glass if possible since this can reduce collateral damage that commonly occurs with installation of a new glass.

Benefits of Repairing Windshield Rock Chips

  • Reduce glare from unfixed chips.

  • Avoid cracks spreading.

  • Avoid replacing your entire windshield

  • Avoid collateral damage that can come with replacement

  • Don't lose your vehicle for hours while it's in the shop.

  • Pass state safety inspections.

Specialist Collision Repair A Necessity For Some Cars

Millions of cars zip along the world's roads on a daily basis, and inevitably a percentage of this will end up in a collision repair facility, sometimes of the owner's choosing, more often than not the insurer's. And while most commuter and daily-driven cars that end up in a crash will be repaired satisfactorily at your average auto body repair shop, some brands require specialist training and tools for proper repair.

Notable among these types of cars are luxury and high-performance cars, which use a combination of complicated designs, high-end parts and exotic alloys to achieve the levels of comfort and/or performance that they have become known for. In cases like these, it is to the owner's benefit to have such a car repaired at a specialist collision repair facility. But it is impractical, not to mention expensive and inefficient, to ship a car back to the factory to have it repaired properly.

Realizing the necessity of proper collision repair and reconstructive techniques, some manufacturers have established programs that approve a particular auto body repair shop for handling their vehicles. These programs are composed of a network of factory-approved facilities where technicians are trained and equipped to handle even the most demanding repair work required for a particular brand. The process a shop undergoes to obtain certification is an exacting one, and often requires additional investment in specialist equipment. Aside from committing to a training program, an auto body repair shop that wants to be certified must also use genuine parts and materials. And to ensure that quality is maintained, there are factory monitoring teams that regularly check on these shops as well as provide updated information and support when necessary. Only by submitting to a rigid and exacting process can a repair shop assure a worried owner that his or her beloved car will be restored to its original state, and that its value will be maintained.

Of course, not every collision repair facility should commit to a certification process where additional training and equipment expenditure are a necessity. Sometimes, the market is just not there for a particular brand or area. Or conversely, there may already be too many certified centers for a particular brand and the increased competition can only spell thinner margins for shops in the area. But at the very least, car owners and auto body repair shops alike should be aware of the existence of these certification programs, so that high-value cars are not diminished in performance and value when they are involved in a crash.

Luxury Motor Plans

To fully enjoy the power, freedom and exhilarating driving experience of luxury motoring - motorists need the peace of mind that comes with a luxury motor plan.

Knowing that, should it prove necessary, their car will be serviced and maintained at no cost to themselves, takes away the worry of owning a luxury vehicle and puts the drivers mind where it should be - enjoying the open road.

Maintenance Plans

A luxury maintenance plan absorbs all maintenance and service costs, with the only exceptions being between-service top-up of fluids, fuel, cracked or broken glass, and tyres.

Innovative auto motor manufacturers of luxury vehicles typically include these maintenance plans as standard on their vehicles for up to five years or 100,000 km. Top-up options to extend maintenance plans are available for up to 200,000 km or five years.

These maintenance plans are designed for easy operation on the part of the owner who can affect regular servicing and maintenance and repairs by making an appointment with any of the approved servicing dealers of the luxury vehicle in question.

A relevant service department will then handle all the work while liaising directly with the vehicle owner's Luxury Motor Plan Maintenance Unit, meaning that no extra effort or payment is required.

Luxury motor plans are transferable as the plan is registered with the vehicle should the vehicle be sold to a new owner before the maintenance plan has expired.

This provides added resale value and is also available in addition to standard one-year/unlimited distance vehicle warranties. The luxury motor plan can even - subject to certain exclusions - cover any repairs necessary after the expiry of the standard warranty.

Pre-owned Freeway Plans

Even pre-owned vehicles can benefit from a comprehensive maintenance plan which covers services, wear and tear items and certain repairs.

Innovative car manufacturers who are aiming to maintain high standards of quality, give drivers added peace of mind that their pre-owned vehicles will receive the same servicing and maintenance when necessary. These comprehensive plans are included on all their pre-owned vehicles for 1 year/25 000km or the remaining balance of the existing freeway plan.

Additional Value Services

Along with value and benefits provided with a vehicle's maintenance plan, additional value added services are also available to take any lingering doubt out of the luxury driving experience. Services, such as on the spot roadside assistance by fully equipped and trained technicians, are also available, as well as a range of innovative insurance options.

There can be no better motoring peace of mind than knowing that your car will be taken care of by the very same people who put such care and consideration into its construction. This is the value of a luxury motor plan that is as innovative as the vehicle it covers.

Take Advantage of the Auto Repair Industry's Stability by Enrolling in a Car Mechanic School

For Jason Smith, owner of M&M Car Care Center Inc. in Merrillville, Indiana, the dismal economic climate has caused his business to go into high gear, with more car owners ditching new automobiles in favour of used vehicles. Smith comments that there's been a remarkable increase of people purchasing cars that are a number of years old due to the depreciation and money required by owning a new vehicle. He adds that people have now begun to realize that paying for repairs and maintenance work is a far cheaper, not to mention smarter, alternative to dealing with a car payment for the next 5 years or so.

For prospective mechanics, this development opens up a vast number of employment opportunities. Most people are now catching on to this trend by attending a car mechanic school. Fortunately, it's not too late to jump on the bandwagon, and if you have the free time and extra resources, going car mechanic school is definitely an investment that will pay off over the long run.

Smith himself used to work as an auto mechanic specializing in repairs. In 2007, he quite his stable job and opened his own shop. In the past 3 years alone, his business has grown by over 150%, allowing him to move from his old 1600-square-foot shop into his new 3000-square-foot facility in Merrillville.

Indeed, it seems that the auto repair industry isn't showing any signs of decreased growth brought about by the economy. In fact, there's even a shortage of skilled auto mechanics in some parts of the country. If you're thinking of starting a new career in this secure industry, now's the perfect time to enroll in a car mechanic school and acquire all the skills you will need to find work.

DIY Auto Painting - Do it Yourself!

Great auto painting involves a series of several deliberate, detail-oriented tasks.

If executed carefully and correctly, the result is an A+ paint job that looks professional and appealing. After a well-executed paint job, the paint will feel perfectly smooth and flawless to the touch, it will appear lustrous and shiny to the eye, and will last for many years thereafter.

It is important to understand at the outset, before beginning any automotive-painting project that the ultimate result is determined by how well and thoroughly each stage is completed. One stage builds upon the other, and hasty mistakes and errors cannot be concealed, no matter how many coats of paint and clear coat you apply.

There is no point in rushing through stages, because of shoddy workmanship, however minor at any stage, will doom all further efforts, and make it pointless to continue.

Most unsatisfactory do-it-yourself paint jobs can be traced to rushing through steps and not finishing each step thoroughly and completely.

So first rule of thumb:

Take your time to do it right, and if you make a mistake, stop and correct it. It's self-defeating to push forward without meticulous care given to each step. After all, the fundamental reason you undertook the project in the first place is because you wanted a terrific paint job you can be proud of and a car that doesn't embarrass you.

Painting a car requires slow, fastidious execution of the following general steps:

- Sanding and repairing surface imperfections, like scratches

- Applying body filler as needed

- Sanding and more sanding, using progressively finer grades of sandpaper

- Thoroughly cleaning the entire surface to be painted

- Masking carefully all areas of the car you want to protect from paint

- Applying primer

- Applying the paint color (usually three coats)

- Applying the clear coat (usually three coats)

To accomplish the project successfully, you will need a good paint gun, a compressor, sandpaper in a variety of grades, good auto paint and clear coat, a few hand tools, clear plastic and masking tape, and some patience.

Some people get hung up on which paint gun to choose to paint their car, and waste an enormous amount of time worrying over the features and benefits of the many models of paint guns available on the market. This is a useless exercise. Any reputable brand will do and many can be purchased for around a hundred dollars. The most important consideration is to choose a paint gun that feels "right" to you, one that is comfortable in your hand.

A word of warning on paints and solvents is in order: Make certain all of these products are compatible or the results could be ugly, if not disastrous. Also, be sure the compressor is suitable for the paint gun and delivers the paint to the car's surface correctly.

Car Repair - How To Find an Auto Shop

It can be very stressful to search for a qualified auto repair shop when you are in desperate need of car repair. Whether your vehicle demands the attention of a mechanic for a routine tune up or for serious maintenance, it can be hard to make the right decision in the heat of the moment. So make the right choice and plan on finding the best shop ahead of time so you will not have to worry as much when you need one.

The first thing you will want to find out about when asking around mechanic businesses is whether a particular location is qualified by any official mechanic certification programs. If a shop has been approved by one of these associations, then they are qualified and able to offer standard car repair services.

If you have decided on a couple of locations to go check out, give the shop a good observation. See if the business appears to be in good order, and if there are other customers around, ask their opinion on the business. Also, look around to see if there are any signs of the shop's qualifications hanging on the wall. If you do not see any, do not hesitate to ask a technician of his or her qualifications and those of the business as a whole.

Another aspect to take note of when searching for a good car mechanic is that of equipment. Ask workers if the shop is equipped with tools and technology such as diagnostic software, lab scopes, digital volt-ohm meters, hand held computer scanners, logic probes, and online computer systems. If a shop does not have the most up to date technology in the field, diagnosing the problem to successfully complete your car repair could end up costing you a lot more time and money than is necessary.

Money is what most people see as the most important aspect when seeking out a vehicle servicing shop. However, do not make the mistake of being short sighted by overlooking the detail of quality repair. Certified car repair specialists may cost more than a general repair shop, but they will be able to locate the exact problem with your automobile and provide excellent labor for your money.

A common misconception when gauging affordability is to guess that a shop's size is relative to the cost of the services it provides. These days, most businesses are fairly competitive, considering the amount of money spent on training and equipment, regardless of the size of the business.

For most of us, our cars are indispensable and necessary in helping us carry out the tasks of our daily lives. They transport our families and us to and from where we need to be. Do not make the mistake of merely choosing the cheapest repair shop when in need of vehicle care. Take time to do the research and you will find the best option for you and your car, thus saving time and guaranteeing peace of mind. A well serviced car is a safe one.

Automotive Suspension Components - MacPherson Struts

You may well have been told that you have "MacPherson Struts" on your vehicle and wondered at the dealership or big box store automotive service department tech writer what on earth are these car parts and how do they differ from good old fashioned ( and inexpensive ) auto shock absorbers.

It is relatively easy to spot if you do have MacPherson Struts. A suspension system with Macs can be easily identified by even automotive repair novices by looking for a very heavy and thick tube shape strut attached to the wheel assembly at the base and slanting upwards away from the wheel. A coil spring is visible from the outside of the strut at the top, and an A-shaped arm running horizontally from the base of the strut so its' too legs attach to the frame.

When the MacPherson strut has the spring around the strut assembly, the shock absorber spindle and spring is sometimes a combined unit held in place at the top by the upper mount assembly and at the bottom by the ball joint and lower control arm. The shock absorber is actually built into the MacPherson struts' outer housing. The coil spring itself is held in place by a lower seat welded to the strut casing and an upper seat bolted to the shock-absorber piston rod. In turn the upper mount bolts to your car, truck, and bus or S.U.V. body.

Any looseness in the control-arm bushings, ball joint, or strut-rod bushings or stabilizer bar links would mean replacement. The strut assembly itself should be checked closely for spring fatigue, poor damping characteristics, binding and popping that may well occur when the wheels are turned or rolled - should be checked between for leaks between the shock shaft and shaft housing. By bouncing the suspension, check for binding which indicates a possible bent shock absorber shaft. If any of these conditions exist the strut will have to be taken apart for service and this is a job for which any back yard mechanic should really seek auto mechanic professional help and assistance

Scissor Car Lifts Can Be Portable, Safe and Easy To Use

Vehicles that are being repaired or inspected are usually lifted in auto service bays by scissor car lifts. As they move up and down, this lift gives the mechanic full access to the vehicle for under care service. There are two types of portable scissor lifts that are both easy and safe to operate. They come in low rise and mid rise lifts. They are equipped with hydraulics to raise the automobile to different levels, depending on what the person wants. There are other features to the scissor car lift, including wheel alignment, automatic safety locks, space savers, slip and turn plates, a lock release and powder coat finish.

Auto repair can come in many shapes and forms, depending on symptoms and signs coming from the vehicle. If the problems of the vehicle are detected early, then drivers are less likely to break down. The vehicle does not always need to be checked just because of noises. The portable scissor automotive lifts can help the driver get proper inspections and repairs done.

Take, the brakes, for example. Having different experiences with the vehicle is the best way to determine if it needs to be checked or not. If the brakes are screeching or there are grinding sounds coming from the wheels, then those are signs that the brakes need repairing. If the brakes are not fixed, they can totally give out. This can cause wrecks, bad vehicle damage and extra costs.

The scissor automotive lifts can come with padding that is topped in rubber and is adjustable. They are grooved at right angles which helps match up to the car's needed bodywork. The lifts also come equipped with safety latches, which are used when raising the car up to different heights. A hydraulic pump will raise the vehicle and the pump is operated by a button. This device powers the car up into the air. When lowering the vehicle, the scissor lift operator holds levers, one of which retracts and the other releases fluid.

Whether the vehicle owner or auto technician is working under the vehicle, there is always a concern for safety. If the car is raised more than 6 feet off the ground, then most likely the technician can stand up when he works. At this level, the potential for injury is slightly higher. If the car slips off the lift, that is when the danger is really present. When using a car lift, it is important to select a lift with the sufficient weight capacity. When positioning the vehicle, the operator may need to use auxiliary adaptors.

Remember, it is important to always check the vehicle's exhaust system, get oil changes on time and always check the transmission fluid. By having regular vehicle inspections and tune-ups, motorists can stay ahead of the game, helping prevent problems with the automobile.

The Three Types Of Paint: Which Is Best For Your DIY Auto Painting Project?

Acrylic enamel auto paint, acrylic lacquer, and urethane are the 3 choices the DIY auto painter has at his disposal when starting a new project. This choice can be a daunting one.

No one wants to buy a costly paint only to find out it is the incorrect one. Luckily, with a little research and the right FAQ, any DIY auto painter can easily discern which paint is the right fit. Acrylic enamel auto paint and its cousin acrylic lacquer are the most common choices for restoration projects while urethane is recommended by industry professionals for DIY auto painting projects.

As acrylic enamel auto paint is old technology, one may find themselves drawn to the urethane option. Unfortunately, if you are in possession of an older or classic vehicle, you will most likely be going with the acrylic enamel option. While the base coat/clear coat is strongly recommended by industry professionals, single-stage urethanes are a viable option.

They do not require an application of clear coat to add glossiness. However any scratches or damage will visibly wreak havoc on the final color. Single-stage urethanes are blended with reducers and hardeners. This gives the paint durability and a shiny gloss with only one application necessary. Most urethanes will take just a few coats and dry at a rapid rate. They can also be wet-sanded to ensure minor defects and small blemishes are not visible.

It is hard to tell how many coats will be required as the number will vary depending on the color chosen for the project. Whether you decide to use a single-stage urethane or multi-stage paint systems, ensure the undercoats are properly prepared. This will ensure your new paint comes out looking pristine with a reflective shine.

Urethane should be discussed in depth, but for our purposes, this simple overview will aid the painter in deciding which paint choice is optimal. It is also important to remember to undertake any paint job under the right conditions. This is where a paint-booth rental from a reputable auto body repair shop will aid you immensely.

Not only will they provide you with an area to safely and cleanly paint your vehicle, but most will also have heaters or infra-red lamps installed to ensure the maximum cure for your urethane paint. With a little attention to detail and some patience, you should be on your way to an awesome paint job.
