A Few Tips for Troubleshooting Car Repair

Auto repair can be difficult for many people when the need occurs. So it is important to have at least a basic understanding of your vehicle. Here are some tips to assist you in keeping your car running well and safe.

Responsible Vehicle Ownership

Part of being a responsible car owner is recognizing the need for repairs when they arise, as well as protecting yourself and others from the trauma an accident from a faulty vehicle can cause. Even regular maintenance on your vehicle such as transmission filter replacement will not keep you from at some point requiring transmission repair. Just as regular brake checks and oil changes will not restrict you from possibly needing brake repair or an engine rebuild or replacement. But these items are an imperative part of responsible vehicle ownership. Keeping an eye out for impending problems with your vehicle is the first step in troubleshooting.

First Signs of Transmission Trouble

Although you can keep an eye and ear open for some of the first signs of trouble, just using visual or audible clues may not be enough to properly diagnose whether or not you may need auto repair. However, those clues may be just what you need to realize that it is time to get your vehicle in for a maintenance check up or tune up. Many auto care shops offer free checkups to encourage you to visit their place of business.

For indications that you may need transmission repair, you should make a point of parking in a spot that is clear of other stains, or be prepared to slide a large clean piece of plastic or paper under your vehicle once you have parked. It is best to be able to leave the vehicle parked overnight to best judge if there is a leak. Once you return to your vehicle remove the plastic or paper from under your car and look for signs of red transmission fluid. Although the fluid may be slightly dirty brown when you see it, it will still have a red undertone if it is from the transmission.

If your vehicle has left a reddish spot on the floor, plastic, or paper, you should take it immediately to a shop for transmission repairs.

Clues to Needing Brake Repair

For troubleshooting the need for brake repairs you will need to pay special attention when applying the brake pedal while driving. Does the brake pedal seem to depress more than usual? Does it feel "mushy" instead firm? Although that may be a simple matter of low brake fluid it is still worth it to have a professional free brake check. There may be leaks, worn out pads or brake shoes, worn brake cylinders, or other issues that may require brake repair. Additionally, if your brakes begin to screech when you apply pressure to the pedal it is likely you are in definite need of brake repairs. This often is a warning that your pads or shoes are worn so low that metal is scraping on the brake discs which can ruin them. Brake "rotors" or discs are very expensive to replace. Brake repair can be much less costly if you catch it early.

In summary, it is always better to use preventive maintenance when possible and the suggestions in this article are sure ways to help save you time and money as well as keep your vehicle safer.
